Air Fryer Buying Guide (2026)

How to choose an air fryer: basket vs oven style, the right size for your household, features that matter, and what air fryers still do badly.

Basket vs oven style

Basket models (Ninja AF101, Cosori Pro II, Dash Compact) use a pull-out basket with a crisper plate. Hot air circulates tightly, so they crisp the best and are simplest to shake mid-cook. Oven-style models (like the Instant Vortex Plus) have a front door, racks, and often rotisserie. They fit more food and replace a toaster oven, but crisping is slightly less even and they take more counter space. For maximum crunch on everyday foods, basket wins. For versatility and family volume, oven-style wins.

Sizing by household

This is the decision that matters most. 2 quarts: one person, snacks, reheating. 3 to 4 quarts: two to three people, the most popular range. 5 to 6 quarts: families of four or more. The golden rule: food needs space for hot air to circulate, so an overcrowded basket steams instead of crisps. When between sizes, go bigger only if you will actually fill it; heating a half-empty 6-quart fryer wastes energy and counter space.

Features that actually matter

Dishwasher-safe nonstick basket: non-negotiable for daily use. Temperature range and presets: useful, but you will use three settings for 90 percent of cooking. Shake reminders and viewing windows: genuinely helpful for even results. Dehydrate and reheat: the two bonus functions owners actually use. Ignore gimmick presets you will never touch; they do not make food better.

What air fryers do badly

Honest limits: wet batters drip through the basket before they set; leafy greens blow around and burn; large roasts do not fit; cheese-heavy dishes melt into the crisper plate; popcorn is unreliable; and rice, pasta, and soups obviously need a pot. Air fryers also will not brown like a deep fryer or a ripping-hot cast iron pan. Knowing these limits before buying prevents disappointment.

Questions, answered

What is the best air fryer size for two people?

Four quarts. It handles a real dinner for two with room to spare and does not dominate the counter. Three quarts works for light cooking; five-plus is overkill unless you batch cook.

Do I need a viewing window?

Nice to have, not essential. It lets you check browning without opening the basket and losing heat. Shaking the basket halfway is more important for even results than any window.

How long do air fryers last?

Typically three to five years of regular use. The nonstick coating on the basket is usually what wears out first; hand-washing instead of dishwashing extends its life noticeably.
