Air Purifier Not Working? 4 Fixes (2026)
Air purifier won't turn on, weak airflow, or stuck on high? Four common causes and fixes before you call support.
Most air purifier problems come down to power, clogged filters, or sensors. Work through these four fixes before assuming the unit is broken.
Unit will not turn on
Check that the power cord is fully seated and the outlet works by testing another device. Many purifiers have a filter access panel interlock: if the back panel is not clicked fully shut after a filter change, the unit will not start. Remove and reseat the panel.
Weak airflow
Weak airflow almost always means a clogged filter or blocked intake. Remove the pre-filter and vacuum it, check that plastic wrap was removed from a new HEPA filter (a classic mistake), and make sure curtains or furniture are not pressed against the intake.
Stuck on high speed
If auto mode is stuck on high, the air quality sensor may be dusty. Gently vacuum or wipe the sensor vent. Cooking smoke, candles, or a nearby diffuser can also keep readings elevated; ventilate the room and see if it settles.
Filter light will not reset
After replacing the filter, the indicator usually needs a manual reset: hold the filter button for 3 to 5 seconds until the light clears. Check your manual for the exact button, since it varies by model.
Questions, answered
Why does my purifier smell?
A musty smell usually means the carbon filter is saturated or the unit ran in high humidity. Replace the filter and run the room drier for a while.
Should I leave it running when I am away?
Yes, especially on auto or low. It keeps dust and allergens from building up, so the air is clean when you return.
