Bed Pillow Problems? Fixes (2026)
Common bed pillow problems: neck pain, flat pillows, overheating, lumps, smells, and pillows that go out of shape.
Most pillow trouble comes from wrong loft, tired fill, or care mistakes, not from a faulty pillow. Work through these fixes in order before buying a replacement.
Waking with neck pain or stiffness
Check loft first: lie in your usual position and ask whether your head sits level with your spine. Side sleepers usually need more height, stomach sleepers less. If the pillow is adjustable, add or remove fill a little at a time over several nights. If it is fixed and the height is wrong, no amount of fluffing will fix it, and a different loft is the answer.
The pillow has gone flat
Fluff fibre pillows by shaking and patting from all sides, and wash and dry them according to the label, since drying restores loft. For foam pillows, check whether the foam has compressed permanently: if it stays thin after airing, the foam is tired. Latex pillows rarely flatten, so a flat latex pillow usually means a damaged core rather than normal wear.
Sleeping hot on the pillow
Switch to a breathable cotton or mesh pillowcase and check whether the pillow's own cover traps heat. Turn a gel pillow to its cool side, and give the pillow air during the day instead of leaving it under heavy bedding. If the pillow still overheats, its core material is the problem, and an open grid or latex pillow will sleep cooler than dense foam.
Lumps, clumps, or uneven fill
For fibre pillows, break up clumps by hand and redistribute the fill evenly, then wash and dry to reset the loft. For adjustable foam pillows, empty the fill, mix it, and refill evenly rather than topping up one side. Lumps that return immediately usually mean the fill has broken down, and the pillow is ready for replacement.
Questions, answered
Why does my new pillow smell?
New foam and latex carry a mild factory scent that fades with airing, usually within a day or two. Air the pillow in a ventilated room before first use, and wash the cover. A smell that persists for weeks, or a sour smell on an old pillow, means moisture or wear, and the pillow should be replaced.
How do I keep a pillow fresh between washes?
Use a washable pillow protector under the case, air the pillow regularly, and wash the case weekly. Protectors catch sweat and oils before they reach the pillow itself, which extends the time between full washes considerably.
My pillow feels fine but my neck still aches, what else could it be?
Check the mattress and your sleep position as well as the pillow. A sagging mattress drops the shoulders and changes the height the pillow must fill, and a very soft mattress needs a lower pillow than a firm one. If pain persists, a clinician's advice beats another pillow purchase.
