Bed Sheets Problems? Fixes (2026)

Common bed sheet problems: fitted sheets that pop off, pilling, wrinkles, fading, and sheets that sleep too hot.

Most sheet trouble comes from fit, washing, or a mismatch between fabric and sleeper, not from a faulty set. Work through these fixes in order before replacing sheets that may only need a different size or a gentler cycle.

The fitted sheet pops off at night

Measure the mattress plus any topper and compare with the pocket depth stated on the listing: a pocket that is too shallow cannot hold, however good the elastic. Choose a set with all-around elastic rather than corner-only elastic, and tuck the fitted sheet fully under the mattress at the corners. If the mattress is very thick, move to a deep-pocket set such as the Mellanni or ettitude sets here, rather than stretching a standard pocket to fit.

Sheets pill after a few washes

Pilling usually comes from friction in the wash: wash sheets alone or with similar smooth fabrics, avoid washing them with towels or rough items, and use a gentle cycle with cool water. Bamboo rayon and microfibre pill more readily than cotton, so those fabrics need the gentlest cycle of all. A fabric shaver removes existing pills safely, but persistent heavy pilling after gentle washing means the fabric itself is wearing out.

Sheets come out of the dryer badly wrinkled

Remove sheets promptly from the dryer and smooth them onto the bed while still slightly damp, which relaxes most cotton wrinkles without ironing. Percale and linen wrinkle more than sateen or microfibre by nature, so buyers who hate wrinkles should choose sateen or microfibre, or accept linen wrinkles as part of the look. Overdrying worsens wrinkles, so use low heat and stop the cycle while the fabric is just dry.

Sheets sleep too hot

Switch weave before switching brand: move from sateen or microfibre to percale, linen, or bamboo, and pair the sheet with a lighter duvet. Check the room too, since a warm room defeats even the most breathable sheet, and consider sleeping with the flat sheet alone on the hottest nights. If a bamboo set still sleeps hot, the cause is often a heavy duvet or a waterproof mattress protector trapping heat underneath.

Questions, answered

Why do my white sheets go grey?

Hard water, hot washing, and detergent build-up grey white cotton gradually. Wash white sets promptly in cool or warm water with a gentle detergent, skip chlorine bleach, which weakens cotton, and avoid drying white sheets with dark loads, which transfers dye.

How do I stop sheets tangling in the wash?

Wash sheets as a set rather than mixing them with small items, and close any zips or buttons on pillowcases before washing. Tangling comes from sheets wrapping around smaller laundry, so a sheets-only load, or a laundry bag for pillowcases, keeps the load moving freely.

Can I iron bed sheets?

Yes, cotton and linen iron well on a warm setting, and ironing is the only way to get a pressed look from percale or linen. Sateen and bamboo need a cooler iron and a press cloth to protect the smooth finish, while microfibre should not be ironed hot, since synthetic fibres can melt or glaze.
