Best budget 1/2-inch
CRAFTSMAN 20V Drill Driver Kit (CMCD700C1)
20V 1/2-inch drill kit at a true budget price.

The CRAFTSMAN CMCD700C1 is the budget buy done right: a real 1/2-inch chuck and 280 UWO at a price near the 3/8-inch Black+Decker. One battery and a brushed motor keep it honest, but as a first drill on a budget it beats every 3/8-inch rival.
Strengths
- 1/2-inch chuck accepts full-size bits, unlike 3/8-inch budget drills
- 280 unit watts out covers standard DIY driving
- 24-position clutch for driving control

How we chose
How we rank cordless drill kits
- Power: max torque in inch-pounds and unit watts out determine what the drill can drive. Around 300 UWO covers home DIY; 400-plus suits renovation work.
- Battery platform: the voltage line you buy into determines every future tool purchase. Deeper platforms (DeWalt 20V MAX, Milwaukee M18, Makita 18V LXT) mean more shared-battery tools.
- Chuck: 1/2-inch chucks accept larger bits than 3/8-inch; metal ratcheting chucks grip better and last longer than plastic.
- Clutch: more clutch positions mean finer control over driving depth, which is what prevents stripped screws and cracked wood.
Questions, answered
18V vs 20V: does it matter?
Not the way marketing suggests. DeWalt's 20V MAX and Milwaukee's M18 are nominally the same voltage class: 20V MAX is the maximum voltage, 18V is the nominal voltage of the same cells. Compare torque and battery amp-hours, not the headline voltage number.
How much torque do I need?
For furniture assembly, hanging shelves, and general DIY, 250 to 350 unit watts out or 300 to 400 inch-pounds is plenty. Driving long lag bolts, drilling masonry, or mixing paint needs 500-plus inch-pounds and possibly an impact driver or hammer drill instead.
Should I buy a drill kit or just the tool?
Buy the kit first. A kit includes batteries and a charger, which cost more separately than the kit premium. Bare tools make sense only when you already own batteries on that platform.
Drill driver vs impact driver?
A drill driver drills holes and drives screws with an adjustable clutch. An impact driver delivers rotational impacts for stubborn fasteners and long screws with less wrist strain. Most DIYers start with the drill driver; add an impact driver when you start driving lots of long screws.
