Blender Not Working? Fixes That Work (2026)

Your blender won't turn on, smells like burning, or leaves chunks. Here are the most common causes and fixes.

Most blender failures are overheated motors, dull blades, or assembly mistakes. These fixes resolve the majority of problems without a repair shop.

Blender won't turn on

Check that the jar is locked onto the base: most blenders have a safety interlock. Try a different outlet. If it stopped mid-blend, the thermal protector tripped; unplug for 20 minutes to reset.

Burning smell during blending

Stop immediately. The motor is overloaded: the mixture is too thick, the run is too long, or ice is jamming the blades. Add liquid, cut ingredients smaller, and blend in 30-second bursts with rests.

Leaves chunks no matter how long it runs

Add more liquid and load ingredients in the right order: liquids first, frozen last. Worn blades also cause this: if the blender is old and performance has declined gradually, the blade assembly needs replacing.

Leaking from the bottom of the jar

The blade assembly gasket is worn, misseated, or the jar is cracked. Disassemble, inspect the rubber gasket for tears, reseat it evenly, and tighten. Replacement gaskets are cheap for most brands.

Questions, answered

How do I know if the motor is dead?

If the thermal reset doesn't bring it back, there's no sound at all with power confirmed, or the burning smell persists on every use, the motor is done. For premium blenders, contact the manufacturer about service; for budget ones, replace.

Can I sharpen blender blades?

Not effectively at home. Blender blades are designed to be replaced, not sharpened, and most are inexpensive. If performance has faded over years, a new blade assembly restores it.
