Bose Home Speaker 500

Bose Home Speaker 500

Best for: Living rooms where one speaker must sound like a small hi-fi and show what is playing.

#3 in our rankings · Best Sonos room speaker

Sonos One (Gen 2)

Sonos One (Gen 2)

Best for: Buyers building a Sonos multi-room system room by room.

Our recommendation

Buy the Bose Home Speaker 500 if one room matters most and you want both assistants plus a display. Buy the Sonos One (Gen 2) if you plan to add rooms over time and want the deepest multi-room system. Both sound excellent; the difference is whether you are buying a speaker or a system.

Assistant choice

The Bose runs Alexa and Google Assistant, so mixed households need not pick a side. The Sonos One also offers both assistants, but its real strength is Sonos Voice Control plus app-based multi-room, which suits owners who control music from the Sonos app rather than by voice alone.

Display and controls

The Bose display shows what is playing and the time, which is genuinely useful in a kitchen. The Sonos One has no display and relies on the app, which is cleaner to look at but slower for a glance. Neither difference changes sound, but it changes daily interaction.

Expansion path

Sonos expansion is the One's trump card: stereo pairs, soundbar surrounds, and a wide range of speakers from portable to home cinema. Bose expansion exists but is narrower, with fewer models and less home cinema depth. A buyer who will stop at one or two speakers need not care; a buyer planning five rooms should.

Choose Bose Home Speaker 500 if…

  • You want a display showing track info
  • Both Alexa and Google matter in your home
  • One room is the whole plan

Choose Sonos One (Gen 2) if…

  • You will expand room by room
  • You want stereo pairs and soundbar surrounds
  • The Sonos app is already your music centre

Strengths and limitations

Bose Home Speaker 500

Strengths

  • Two drivers firing in opposite directions create a wider stereo image than a single-driver smart speaker, which is the 500's main advantage over the 300.
  • A small colour display shows album art, track info, and the time, so the speaker works as a kitchen or living room information point as well as a music source.
  • Both Alexa and Google Assistant are built in, with Bluetooth and AirPlay 2 as fallbacks for guests and Apple devices.

Limitations

  • Mains powered and fairly large, so it stays where you put it.
  • Bose multi-room support is narrower than Sonos, with fewer speaker models to expand into.
  • The display is small and best read up close rather than across a room.

Sonos One (Gen 2)

Strengths

  • A proven Sonos sound signature in a compact bookshelf shape that suits kitchens, bedrooms, and offices without dominating them.
  • Choice of Alexa or Google Assistant on the same hardware, plus AirPlay 2 for Apple households, keeps every major ecosystem usable.
  • Pairs with a second One for true stereo separation, or joins a Sonos soundbar as rear surrounds, so one purchase stays useful as the system grows.

Limitations

  • No Bluetooth audio input, so guests without Wi-Fi access cannot just connect and play.
  • Mains powered only, so it cannot move to the garden the way the Move 2 can.
  • The Sonos app remains the control centre, which some buyers find heavier than the Alexa or Google Home apps.

Questions, answered

Which sounds better?

Both are excellent room speakers. The Bose is wider from a single box, while a Sonos One sounds best as part of a pair or a Sonos system. Buy one Bose for a room, or two Sonos Ones for stereo, and the gap narrows.

Do both work with Apple devices?

Yes. Both support AirPlay 2, so iPhones and iPads can stream directly without either assistant.
