Car Seat Problems? Fixes That Actually Help
Common car seat problems and fixes: loose installation, twisted straps, recline angle issues, and LATCH troubles.
Car seat problems are usually installation problems. These fixes address the most common ones; when in doubt, find a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician for a free check.
Seat moves more than an inch at the belt path
Reinstall with more weight in the seat: kneel into it while tightening the LATCH strap or vehicle belt to compress the vehicle cushion. For LATCH installs, confirm the InRight or SuperCinch connectors are fully latched with an audible click. For belt installs on the Britax, reopen the ClickTight panel and re-tension. Retest movement only at the belt path, not at the top of the seat, where some movement is normal.
Harness straps twist constantly
Twisting comes from the straps rotating in the buckle or splitter plate. Straighten them fully before each use and keep the chest clip at armpit level, which resists rotation. When adjusting, pull the straps flat through the slots rather than yanking. If a strap is permanently curled, contact the manufacturer for a replacement harness; do not iron or treat the webbing.
Recline angle indicator shows incorrect for rear-facing
For newborns, the indicator must show the full recline range; an overly upright newborn seat is a breathing-safety issue. Adjust the recline foot or use the seat's built-in angle adjuster, and recheck with the vehicle on level ground. In vehicles with sloped seats, a tightly rolled towel or pool noodle at the seat bight is the approved leveling aid where the manual allows it.
LATCH connectors will not reach or stay attached
Confirm you are using the correct lower anchors, not the tether anchor or a cargo hook; the owner's manual diagram shows their location. Extend the LATCH strap fully before connecting, then tighten. Note the 65-pound combined child-plus-seat LATCH weight limit: beyond it, you must switch to a seat belt install. Check your vehicle manual, since some vehicles have lower anchor weight limits.
Questions, answered
Where can I get my install checked?
Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians offer free checks at fire stations, hospitals, and inspection events. Find one through the national technician locator.
My seat was in a minor crash. Is it still good?
Most manufacturers require replacement after any crash, though some follow the NHTSA minor-crash criteria. When in doubt, replace the seat; do not guess with crash history.
