Cocktail Shaker Not Working (2026)

Fixes for common cocktail shaker problems: lid stuck, leaking seal, cloudy pour, and a shaker that will not chill the drink.

Most shaker problems come from a cold seal, a loose fit, or pulp in the strainer rather than from a broken tool. Work through the fixes below in order before replacing the shaker.

The lid is stuck and will not come off

Run warm water over the lid and cap for a few seconds, since the metal expands and the seal loosens. Tap the side of the lid firmly with the heel of your hand, then twist instead of pulling straight up. For a Boston set, tap the side of the top tin where it meets the lower tin, which breaks the vacuum seal. Never pry with a knife, which dents the rim and makes the next seal worse.

The shaker leaks while shaking

Stop and re-seat the seal: press a cobbler cap on firmly, or press Boston tins together so the rims align and tap once to set the seal. Check that the tin is not overfilled, since too much liquid and ice leaves no room for the seal to hold. Hold the shaker with one hand on the base and one on the top, and shake with the seam away from you so any small leak goes away from your clothes.

The pour is cloudy or full of pulp

Strain twice: pour through the built-in strainer or Hawthorne strainer into the glass, then through a fine mesh strainer held over the glass for pulpy drinks. Muddle fruit gently instead of shredding it, and shake with larger ice cubes, which chill without breaking into small chips that pass through the strainer.

The drink is not cold enough

Use plenty of ice and fill the shaker to the ice line before shaking, since too little ice melts fast and waters the drink down. Shake hard for ten to fifteen seconds, until the outside of the shaker is frosty and cold to the touch. Chill the glass in the freezer first, and use fresh ice rather than ice that has sat in the shaker and started to melt.

Questions, answered

Why does my Boston shaker stick together?

Cold metal contracts and the vacuum seal tightens as the shaker chills, which is normal. Tap the side of the top tin firmly to break the seal, then twist the tins apart. Storing the tins separately stops them sticking in the cupboard.

How do I clean a shaker that smells of old citrus?

Rinse it with warm water straight after use, then wash with warm soapy water and dry it fully. For stubborn smells, soak it in warm water with a spoonful of baking soda, then rinse and dry. Never leave citrus and sugar to dry inside the shaker.

Can I shake a fizzy drink?

No. Shaking a carbonated drink builds pressure and sprays when the lid opens. Build fizzy drinks in the glass and stir gently instead, or shake the still ingredients first and top with the fizzy mixer afterwards.
