Our verdict

The Cuisinart Griddler is the best griddle for small kitchens because it refuses to be just a griddle: contact grill, panini press, full grill, full griddle, and a split half-and-half mode cover more cooking jobs than any single appliance this size. The trade-off is capacity and longevity: 180 sq. in. serves two, and the nonstick plates are consumable parts with a finite life at high heat. If your kitchen can only fit one extra appliance, this is the one. If you cook for a crowd, it is not.

What we like

  • Five configurations: contact grill, panini press, full grill, full griddle, half grill/half griddle
  • Reversible nonstick plates are removable and dishwasher safe
  • Floating hinge adjusts to thick sandwiches and steaks without crushing

What to watch out for

  • 180 sq. in. surface cooks for two, not a crowd
  • Nonstick plates wear with metal utensils and sustained high heat
  • Grease collects around the hinge and needs wiping

Who it is for

Best for apartment and small-kitchen cooks who want one appliance to grill, press, and griddle.

The five configurations

The reversible plates are the whole product: grill plates with raised ridges on one side, flat griddle plates on the other, and the ability to run both plates the same way (full grill, full griddle), different ways (half grill/half griddle), or closed as a contact grill and panini press. The floating hinge is genuinely useful, adjusting to thick sandwiches and steaks without crushing them. 1500 watts heats the 180 sq. in. surface quickly and recovers reasonably between batches.

Plates and cleanup

The plates remove with release buttons and go in the dishwasher, which is the Griddler's biggest practical advantage over cast iron and steel: cleanup is a non-event. The drip tray catches runoff from the grill side. The trade is durability: nonstick coatings degrade with metal utensils and sustained searing heat, and replacement plates cost a meaningful fraction of a new unit.

How it stacks up

Against the Lodge LDP3, the Cuisinart wins on convenience and cleanup and loses on searing power and lifespan; cast iron outlives nonstick by decades. Against the Presto Tilt 'n' Drain, the Cuisinart wins on versatility (five modes vs one) and loses on raw batch size (180 sq. in. vs 22 inches wide). Buy the Cuisinart for variety, the Presto for volume, the Lodge for searing.

Limitations

Two people is the realistic capacity; a family breakfast means batches. The sear/warm selector is the only temperature control, so precision cooking is out. And the nonstick plates, while removable and dishwasher safe, will eventually need replacement if you grill at high heat regularly.

Questions, answered

Can the Cuisinart Griddler replace a panini press?

Yes, that is one of its five modes: close the lid with the grill plates in and the floating hinge presses sandwiches evenly. Owners report it presses as well as dedicated presses costing as much as the whole Griddler.

Are the Griddler plates dishwasher safe?

Yes, the removable cooking plates are dishwasher safe. Hand washing extends the nonstick coating's life, since dishwasher detergent is abrasive over time.

Can you buy replacement plates for the Griddler?

Cuisinart sells replacement plate sets, and they are a common purchase after a few years of heavy use. Factor the eventual replacement cost against the price of a new unit when the time comes.
