Dehumidifier Not Working? Fixes (2026)

Dehumidifier troubleshooting: not collecting water, icing up, musty smells, and units that will not turn on. Causes and fixes.

Most dehumidifier problems are airflow, drainage, or temperature issues, not dead compressors. Work through these before assuming the unit is finished.

Running but not collecting water

Check the easy causes first: room humidity may already be below the humidistat setpoint, so lower the target. A clogged filter chokes airflow and kills extraction, so wash it. If the coils are iced over, the unit cannot extract until it defrosts; this points to low room temperature overwhelming the defrost cycle.

Coils icing up repeatedly

Frequent icing means the room is too cold for the unit's design, usually below 65F. Move the unit to a warmer spot if possible, ensure the auto-defrost has time to cycle (do not run on turbo constantly), and clean the filter since restricted airflow worsens frosting. Persistent icing in a cold basement calls for a low-temperature-rated unit.

Musty smell from the unit

The tank and filter grow mold when left damp. Empty and wash the tank with mild soap, wash or replace the filter, and wipe the tank cavity. Running the unit with a drain hose instead of a standing tank prevents most of this, since water never sits.

Unit will not turn on

Check that the tank is seated correctly; the full-tank switch prevents startup if the tank is misaligned even when empty. Verify the outlet has power and the humidistat is set below current room humidity. If it shut off after a power blip, many units need a manual restart. A unit that trips the breaker repeatedly has an electrical fault and should not be forced.

Questions, answered

Why is my dehumidifier blowing warm air?

Normal: the refrigeration cycle releases heat as it extracts moisture, so exhaust air runs warm. In summer this slightly warms the room, which is one more reason basements are the ideal placement.

How often should I clean the filter?

Monthly during heavy use. A dirty filter is the single most common cause of declining extraction and icing, and washing takes two minutes.
