Drawing Tablet Not Working? Common Fixes (2026)

Fix the most common drawing tablet problems: no pen pressure, laggy strokes, display not detected, and driver conflicts.

Nine out of ten tablet problems are driver or connection issues. Work through these fixes before assuming hardware failure.

Pen has no pressure sensitivity

First confirm pressure is enabled in your art software's brush settings. Then reinstall the tablet driver cleanly: uninstall, reboot, install the latest driver from the manufacturer's site, and reboot again. Disable Windows Ink in the driver settings if strokes behave erratically, as it conflicts with some software's own pen handling.

Strokes lag or feel delayed

Close GPU-heavy background apps and reduce canvas size or brush spacing in your software; lag is usually the computer, not the tablet. On wireless tablets, switch to the USB cable to rule out Bluetooth latency. Update the driver, since latency fixes ship regularly.

Pen display not detected as a monitor

For single-cable USB-C, verify your port supports DisplayPort alt-mode; many USB-C ports are data-only. Otherwise use the manufacturer's 3-in-1 cable (HDMI plus USB) and confirm the display input is set correctly. Try a different cable before anything else; cable faults cause most detection failures.

Tablet stops working after an OS update

Download the latest driver for your new OS version; tablet drivers are the classic casualty of OS upgrades. If the newest driver misbehaves, the manufacturer's support pages often host the previous stable version. On macOS, re-grant Input Monitoring and Accessibility permissions, which updates frequently revoke.

Questions, answered

Why does my pen work as a mouse but not in Photoshop?

Photoshop needs the tablet driver active with the correct API. Reinstall the driver, ensure Photoshop is set to use Wintab (not Windows Ink) if your driver offers the choice, and restart Photoshop after driver changes.

Should I install drivers from the CD in the box?

No. Always download the current driver from the manufacturer's website; boxed drivers are outdated by the time you open them.
