Electric Kettle Not Working? Fixes That Work (2026)

Your electric kettle won't heat, shuts off early, or tastes off. Here are the most common causes and fixes.

Most kettle problems are scale, a faulty base connection, or a tripped thermal cutoff. Work through these before replacing the kettle.

Kettle won't turn on

Try a different outlet first. Then check the base: the kettle must sit fully centered on its contacts. If it overheated, the thermal cutoff may have tripped; unplug for 30 minutes to reset it.

Shuts off before boiling

Heavy scale on the element or temperature sensor causes premature shutoff. Descale thoroughly with vinegar. If it persists after descaling, the thermostat is likely failing.

Takes much longer to boil than before

Scale insulates the heating element. A full descale cycle usually restores original speed immediately. In hard-water areas, consider filtered water to slow buildup.

Water tastes metallic or plasticky

Boil and discard two full kettles of fresh water; new kettles often need this. Persistent metallic taste after weeks of use suggests the interior coating is degrading, and replacement is the fix.

Questions, answered

How do I reset the thermal cutoff?

Unplug the kettle and base, let everything cool completely for 30 minutes, then try again. If it trips repeatedly, the kettle has a fault and should be replaced.

Can I repair a kettle myself?

Generally no. Kettles combine water and mains electricity with sealed elements; internal repair is unsafe. Descaling and base-contact cleaning are the safe DIY limits.
