Garment Steamer Not Steaming? Fixes (2026)
Common garment steamer problems: no steam, weak steam, spitting water, leaking, and scale build-up, with fixes that work.
Most steamer trouble comes from heating, water, or scale, not from a broken machine. Work through these fixes in order before considering a repair or replacement.
No steam at all
Confirm the tank has water filled to the marked line, the unit is plugged in and switched on, and it has had its full heat-up time. On first use, hold the steam trigger for a short while, since air in a dry system delays the first steam. If the unit heats but never steams, check for a kinked hose and a blocked head, and descale if the machine has seen hard water.
Steam is weak or fades quickly
Weak steam usually means scale, a low setting, or a nearly empty tank. Raise the setting for heavier fabrics, refill the tank, and descale following the maker's guidance. On handhelds, also check that the tank is seated fully, since a loose tank starves the pump.
The steamer spits or drips water on clothes
Let the steamer reach full temperature before starting, keep the head upright, and do not overfill past the marked line. Hold the head slightly away from the fabric until steam runs dry and even, and avoid tilting a handheld sharply, which floods the head with water rather than steam.
The steamer leaks from the tank or base
Check the tank seal and seating first, since a mis-seated tank is the most common leak. Inspect seals for cracks or trapped fibres, and never fill past the maximum line. Leaks from the base itself, rather than the tank joint, usually need maker support rather than a home fix.
White flakes or scale in the steam
Scale flakes mean hard-water deposits inside the machine. Descale with the maker's recommended method, run a tank of clean water through afterwards, and switch to filtered water if your area is hard. An anti-calc filter, where fitted, should be replaced on schedule, since a spent filter stops protecting the element.
Questions, answered
Why does my steamer take longer to heat up than when new?
Scale on the heating element insulates it and slows heat-up. Descaling usually restores the original time. If heat-up stays slow after descaling, the element itself may be ageing, which is a maker-support question rather than a user fix.
Can I put scented water or essential oils in my steamer?
No. Scented additives leave residues that clog the system and can damage seals, and some makers treat them as a warranty exclusion. Steam clothes clean, then add scent to the garment separately if you want fragrance.
How should I store my steamer between uses?
Empty the tank, let the unit cool fully, and store it upright with the hose unkinked in a dry place. For travel steamers, fold the head as designed and use the storage bag, which protects the head and keeps accessories together.
