Gym Bag Troubleshooting (2026)

Fixes for common gym bag problems: a bag that smells, zips that stick, a strap that slips, and shoes that mix with clean clothes.

Most gym bag problems come from damp kit stored in a sealed bag, or from a bag that is packed past its size. Work through the fixes below in order, starting with airing and the load, before assuming the bag has failed.

The bag smells even after I empty it

Air the bag out fully: open every compartment, wipe the inside with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, and let it dry in a ventilated room for a day. The smell usually comes from the shoe compartment or a damp towel left inside, so check both. Do not store the bag damp in a sealed cupboard, and wash the towel and the kit after each session. If the smell stays after a full airing, the lining has absorbed it, and a new bag is the honest fix.

The zip sticks or will not close when the bag is full

Take a third of the load out first, since an overpacked bag strains the zip and the stitching. Run the zip slowly with the fabric pulled flat, and check for a thread or a strap caught in the teeth. A little candle wax on a sticky zip helps it run, but a zip that splits under a normal load has failed, and the bag needs replacing rather than forcing.

The shoulder strap keeps slipping off

Tighten the strap so the bag sits high on the hip rather than low on the leg, and check that the padded section is centred on the shoulder. A bag that slips usually means the strap is too long or the load is too heavy for one shoulder. If the strap still slips, switch to a backpack for the walk, or carry the bag by the grab handles for short distances.

My shoes keep mixing with my clean clothes

Use the shoe compartment if the bag has one, and check that it is actually separate rather than a pocket inside the main space. If the bag has no shoe compartment, put the trainers in a separate shoe bag or a plastic bag before they go in. The backpacks here have no shoe compartment, which is their main trade-off, and buyers who need separation should take a duffel instead.

Questions, answered

Why does my bag feel lopsided when I carry it?

The load has settled to one side, which happens when heavy items sit in one pocket. Repack with the heaviest kit in the centre of the main compartment, and keep the shoe compartment balanced. A duffel carried on one shoulder will always pull to that side, so switch shoulders on a long walk, or use a backpack.

Can I use a gym bag in the rain?

It depends on the finish. A water-resistant bag handles a shower, and a TPU laminate bag like the Patagonia Black Hole handles real rain. A plain polyester duffel will soak through in heavy rain, so keep it under cover or in the car. Never leave any gym bag standing in a puddle.

When should I replace a gym bag?

Replace it when the zips fail, the stitching splits, the base wears through, or the smell will not leave after a full airing. A bag that will not close, or that leaks in light rain, is not doing its job. A well-kept bag lasts years, but a bag that is overpacked every day can fail in months.
