Ice Cream Maker Problems? Fixes (2026)

Common ice cream maker problems: icy texture, soft dessert, a bowl that will not freeze, a stalled motor, and pints that spin crumbly.

Most ice cream maker trouble comes from temperature, timing, or an overfilled bowl, not from a broken machine. Work through these fixes in order before considering a repair or replacement.

The dessert is icy instead of smooth

Chill the base fully before churning, since a warm base freezes slowly and grows large ice crystals. Do not overfill the bowl, keep the churn running until the mixture thickens properly, and freeze the finished dessert in a shallow lidded container so it firms quickly. Icy results on a freezer-bowl machine often mean the bowl was not frozen solid, so shake it before use: if liquid moves inside, it needs more freezer time.

The dessert is still soft when the machine stops

This is usually normal: most home machines finish at soft-serve texture because a paddle cannot turn a solid block. Transfer the dessert to a lidded container and freeze it for a few hours for a firm scoop. If the dessert is liquid rather than soft, the bowl was not cold enough, the base was too warm, or the recipe has too much sugar or alcohol, both of which lower the freezing point.

A freezer bowl will not freeze solid

Give it a full day in the coldest part of the freezer, on a flat surface, upright, with nothing stacked on it. Shake it to check: silence means frozen, sloshing means it needs longer. A bowl stored in a crowded freezer door or a freezer set too warm will never fully freeze, and a bowl used twice in one day without refreezing will not work for a second batch.

The motor stops or strains before the dessert is done

The mixture has usually thickened past what the motor can handle, which means it is actually ready, or the bowl was overfilled. Stop the machine, serve or transfer the dessert, and do not force restarts against a solid mixture. On compressor machines, motor protection stopping the churn is a designed safety behaviour, not a fault, and the cooling function will keep the dessert cold while you transfer it.

Questions, answered

Why did my CREAMi pint come out crumbly?

Because the first spin shaves a frozen block into fine particles that have not combined yet. Run the Re-spin function, which usually smooths it, and make sure the pint froze level, since an uneven top makes the blade work unevenly and leaves dry patches.

Why is my compressor machine not getting cold?

First check that it stood upright for the settling period after delivery, since a compressor moved on its side needs time for refrigerant to settle. Also confirm the vents are not blocked and the room is not unusually hot, and give it a full cycle with a chilled base before judging it, since an empty machine feels less cold than a working one.

Can I put the bowl in the dishwasher?

Check the maker instructions for your model, since it varies. Many freezer bowls and compressor bowls need hand washing, while CREAMi pints, lids, and paddles are top-rack dishwasher safe. When in doubt, hand wash with warm soapy water and dry fully, which is safe for every bowl here.
