Electric Pressure Cooker Troubleshooting (2026)

Fix common electric pressure cooker problems: burn notice, failure to pressurize, steam leaks, and sealing-ring odors.

Most pressure cooker problems trace to four causes: the sealing ring, liquid level, the steam valve, or food stuck to the pot bottom. Work through these fixes before assuming the unit is broken.

Burn notice appears during pressure cooking

Stir in more thin liquid and deglaze the pot bottom after sauteing; the sensor trips when food scorches on the base. Layer tomato products and thick sauces on top instead of stirring them in, and never pressure-cook with less than the minimum liquid in the manual (usually 1 cup for 6-quart models).

Pot will not come to pressure

Check three things in order: the sealing ring is seated fully in the lid groove, the steam release valve is set to Sealing (not Venting), and there is enough thin liquid. If steam escapes around the lid rim, the ring is stretched or misseated; reseat it or replace it.

Steam leaks from the lid during cooking

A small wisp during pressurizing is normal; continuous leaking is not. Remove the ring, wash it, and reseat it completely in the groove. Rings stretch with age and heat: if yours is over a year old or visibly loose, replace it.

Sealing ring retains food odors

Soak the ring in white vinegar or run it through the dishwasher top rack. For persistent smells, bake it at 250°F for 30 minutes. Many owners keep two rings: one for savory food, one for yogurt and desserts.

Questions, answered

How often should I replace the sealing ring?

Every 12 to 18 months with regular use, or sooner if steam leaks around the lid or the ring no longer fits snugly in the groove.

Is it safe if the float valve never pops up?

If the countdown starts without the valve rising, the pot is not actually pressurized: stop, check the ring and liquid level, and restart. Do not force the lid.
