Kitchen Towel Troubleshooting (2026)

Fixes for common kitchen towel problems: a towel that will not absorb, lint on glass, a towel that smells, and a weave that snags.

Most kitchen towel problems come from a new towel that has not been washed yet, or from the wrong weave for the job. Work through the fixes below in order, starting with the wash and the job, before assuming the towel has failed.

The towel will not absorb water

Wash the towel once or twice before judging it, since most cotton towels carry a factory finish that repels water until it washes out. Skip fabric softener and dryer sheets, which coat the fibres and cut absorbency, and dry on low heat. If the towel still will not absorb after three washes, it is a poor towel: microfiber towels in particular must never be washed with softener, and a towel that has been washed with softener for years may never fully recover.

The towel leaves lint on glasses and dishes

Check the weave first: new terry towels shed lint, while flour sack and waffle weave towels leave almost none. Wash terry towels a few times before using them on glass, and keep a flour sack towel for polishing glasses. Avoid washing towels with linty laundry like fleece, and skip fabric softener, which can leave a coating that transfers to glass.

The towel smells musty even after washing

The towel is staying damp too long. Hang it spread out on the rail with air around it, not bunched up or folded over itself, and let it dry fully between uses. Wash musty towels in hot water with a little white vinegar in the rinse, then dry them fully on low heat. Replace a towel that still smells after a hot wash and a full dry, since the smell has settled into the fibres.

The waffle weave keeps snagging

Keep waffle towels away from rough pan handles, sharp edges, and rough drawer fronts, since the raised weave catches easily. Wash them on a gentle cycle and dry on low heat, and use a flat or terry towel for scrubbing. A snag does not ruin the towel, but it will not smooth out, so prevention is the only fix.

Questions, answered

Why did my towels shrink after the first wash?

Cotton shrinks a little on the first wash, especially if washed hot or dried on high heat. It is normal and the size settles after that first wash. Wash in warm water and dry on low heat to limit it, and buy a size up if the exact size matters to you.

Can I use kitchen towels on a cooktop?

Yes, for wiping a cool cooktop, but never leave a towel on a hot burner or near an open flame. Cotton and microfiber both burn, and a towel left on a hot surface is a fire risk. Wipe the cooktop once it has cooled, and keep towels on a hook or a rail, not on the stove.

When should I replace a kitchen towel?

Replace it when the weave frays, the edges split, the towel thins out, or it stays musty after a hot wash. A towel that will not absorb after three washes has also had its day. A well-kept cotton towel lasts years, but a towel used for scrubbing rough surfaces can wear out in months.
