Laptop Sleeve Problems? Fixes (2026)

Common laptop sleeve problems: tight fit, sticking zips, damp sleeves, and laptops that slide around inside.

Most sleeve problems come from fit, not from a faulty sleeve. Work through these fixes before replacing a sleeve that may only need measuring, cleaning, or a different packing habit.

The laptop will not fit, or the zip strains to close

Measure the laptop inside any case it lives in, and compare with the sleeve's internal dimensions. A sleeve that is tight on a bare laptop will be tighter still on a cased one, so remove the case for sleeved carry or choose a larger sleeve. Never force a straining zip, since it will fail at the weakest point and may scratch the lid on the way.

The laptop slides around inside the sleeve

The sleeve is too large for the machine, which is a fit problem rather than a padding problem. A loose laptop rattles against its own corners, so switch to a sleeve cut for your laptop's size, or add a thin liner only as a temporary measure. A sleeve should hold the laptop snugly without squeezing it.

The zip sticks or snags on the lining

Clear the zip path of lining fabric and grit, then run the zip slowly with the sleeve flat, since a bunched lining is the usual cause. A small amount of zip lubricant or a rub of wax can help a stiff zip, but a zip that repeatedly snags on the same spot may have a damaged tooth and should be replaced rather than forced.

The sleeve smells damp or feels wet inside

Air the sleeve fully before use, since a sleeve put away damp stays damp and can mark a laptop. Wipe synthetic outers dry after rain, keep leather sleeves out of heavy rain, and never store a laptop in a sleeve that has not dried completely. Persistent dampness after drying suggests the sleeve's lining is holding moisture and needs a longer airing in a ventilated room.

Questions, answered

Can I wash a laptop sleeve?

Spot cleaning is safe for most sleeves, while machine washing is not recommended for padded, rigid, or leather models. Wipe synthetic sleeves with a damp cloth, brush leather gently, and always air dry fully before putting a laptop back inside.

Why does my sleeve look fine but my laptop still gets scratched?

Because scratches usually come from other bag contents, not from the sleeve itself. Check whether keys, chargers, or pens share the laptop compartment, and use the sleeve's pocket for hard items, or a separate pouch, so nothing hard presses against the lid through the sleeve.

When should I replace a laptop sleeve?

When the zip fails, the padding compresses flat, the lining tears, or the fit no longer matches your current laptop. A sleeve that has lost its padding or closure protects in name only, and replacing it costs far less than repairing a damaged laptop.
