Lunch Box Troubleshooting (2026)
Fixes for common lunch box problems: leaks between compartments, food not staying cold or warm, stiff latches, smells in seals, and boxes that will not close.
Most lunch box problems come from overfilling, worn seals, or the wrong box for the food, rather than from the box itself. Work through the fixes below, starting with how full the box is, before replacing it.
Food leaks between compartments
Pack to the fill line, not to the brim: an overfilled compartment presses food against the lid seal and lets it cross over. Check that the seal sits flat and the lid closes fully, since a twisted gasket is the usual cause on a box that used to seal well. If the box has open dividers, like the PlanetBox Rover, it was never leak-proof between sections, so move wet foods into a sealed dipper or a separate cup.
Lunch is warm by lunchtime
Pack cold food cold, freeze the ice pack overnight, and keep the box closed until eating time. The Bentgo Kids Chill ice pack needs a full overnight freeze to work, and a box packed with room-temperature food will not get cold on its own. If cooling still fails by lunch, the ice pack may be worn and need replacing, or the lunch needs a box with a bigger cold capacity.
Warm food is cold by lunchtime
Preheat the OmieBox jar with boiling water for a few minutes before filling it with hot food, since a cold jar steals heat from the food. Fill the jar fully, since a half-full jar loses heat faster, and close the box promptly. If food is still cold by lunch without preheating, the routine, not the jar, is the usual cause.
Latch is stiff or hard to close
Check for overfilling first, since a full box will not latch properly however hard you press. Rinse the latch and seal under warm water to clear dried food, which is the usual cause of a stiff latch. For Bentgo trays, avoid high dishwasher heat, which can warp the tray slightly and make the latches harder to close.
Box smells stale even after washing
Take the lid and seals apart and wash each part properly, since odour hides in silicone seals and latch grooves rather than in the box body. Leave the box open to dry fully, and avoid sealing a damp box, which traps the smell. If odour survives a full strip wash, replace the seal rather than the whole box where the maker sells spares.
Box will not fit in the lunch bag
Measure the bag against the box dimensions before buying a replacement, since tall boxes like the Bentgo Salad Container and stacked boxes like the monbento MB Original need a deeper bag than a flat bento. A flat box like the Yumbox Panino or the Bentgo Easyboxes fits most slim bags. If the box fits only when squeezed, the seal can fail in transit, so a bag that fits loosely is worth the change.
Questions, answered
How often should I wash a lunch box?
After every use, since food residue turns stale fast in a sealed box. Wash the tray, lid, seals, and any ice pack or jar properly, leave the box open to dry, and avoid sealing a damp box overnight.
Can I use bleach to clean a smelly lunch box?
A dilute bleach soak can freshen a stubborn box, but follow the maker care guide and rinse thoroughly afterwards, since bleach can damage seals with repeated use. For routine cleaning, warm water and proper washing are enough.
Why does my steel lunch box dent?
Steel dents on hard drops, and thin steel dents more easily than thick steel. A dent in the body is cosmetic, but a dent at the lid edge can stop the lid closing flat, in which case the box should be replaced rather than forced shut.
