Head to head

MOTU M2 vs M4 (2026)

MOTU M2 vs M4 compared: two inputs or four, the same metering, and which one fits your sessions.

#3 in our rankings · Best metering

MOTU M2 USB-C Audio Interface, 2-Input (Interface Only)

MOTU M2 USB-C Audio Interface, 2-Input (Interface Only)

Best for: Recordists who set levels by eye as well as by ear, and who want very low latency.

#5 in our rankings · Best 4-input value

MOTU M4 USB-C Audio Interface, 4-Input (Interface Only)

MOTU M4 USB-C Audio Interface, 4-Input (Interface Only)

Best for: Small studios recording a mic, a guitar, and a stereo keyboard or synth at once.

Our recommendation

Buy the M4 if you record three or four audio sources at once, even occasionally, since the price step is small for double the inputs and outputs. Buy the M2 if your sessions are always one or two sources: it is the same interface in a smaller box, and the money saved buys a better microphone.

Inputs: 2 vs 4, and what the extra two are

The M2 has two mic/line/Hi-Z combo inputs. The M4 adds two balanced line inputs, for a total of four, but only two of those four take a microphone. A four-mic session still needs a bigger interface. What the M4 really adds is room for a mic, a guitar, and a stereo keyboard or synth at once.

Outputs: 2 vs 4

The M2 has two balanced outputs plus RCA mirrors. The M4 has four balanced outputs plus four RCA mirrors, which suits a second pair of monitors or outboard gear. If you own one pair of monitors, the extra outputs sit unused.

Everything else is the same

Same ESS Sabre32 converters with 120 dB of dynamic range, same full-colour LCD metering, same low-latency drivers, same MIDI, and the same software bundle. Both are bus powered over USB-C. The choice is purely about how many sources you record at once.

Choose MOTU M2 USB-C Audio Interface, 2-Input (Interface Only) if…

  • You record one or two sources at a time
  • You own one pair of monitors
  • You would rather spend the difference on a microphone

Choose MOTU M4 USB-C Audio Interface, 4-Input (Interface Only) if…

  • You record a mic, a guitar, and a stereo keyboard at once
  • You run two pairs of monitors or outboard gear
  • You want headroom to grow without buying a second interface

Strengths and limitations

MOTU M2 USB-C Audio Interface, 2-Input (Interface Only)

Strengths

  • The full-colour LCD shows level meters for every input and output, so clipping is visible before it is audible.
  • ESS Sabre32 converters give the outputs a measured 120 dB of dynamic range.
  • Latency is very low with the MOTU drivers, which matters when monitoring through the computer.

Limitations

  • No Auto Gain or clip protection, so levels need watching.
  • The software bundle is generous but takes time to install and sort through.
  • Two inputs only, with no ADAT or other expansion.

MOTU M4 USB-C Audio Interface, 4-Input (Interface Only)

Strengths

  • Four inputs for the price of many two-input rivals, with two mic preamps plus two line inputs.
  • The same full-colour LCD metering as the M2, now covering four inputs and four outputs.
  • Four balanced outputs make it easy to run a second pair of monitors or outboard gear.

Limitations

  • Only two of the four inputs take a microphone; the other two are line level only.
  • No Auto Gain or clip protection.
  • The extra outputs are wasted if you only own one pair of monitors.

How they fit the wider field

Neither one quite right? The full rankings cover 10 picks matched to different buyers.

Questions, answered

Can the M4 record four microphones?

No. Only two inputs have mic preamps; the other two are line level. For four microphones you need an interface with four preamps, such as a larger rack unit.

Is the M4 bigger than the M2?

Slightly wider and heavier, but both are desktop boxes in the same style. Neither needs a power supply, since both run on USB bus power.
