Neck Pillow Not Working? Fixes (2026)
Why your neck pillow still leaves you sore: fit, positioning, and design-mismatch fixes.
A neck pillow that does not help is almost never defective; it is usually mispositioned, the wrong design for your sleep style, or the wrong size. These fixes address the real causes in order of likelihood.
My chin still drops to my chest
You need front support, not side cushioning. Standard U-pillows cannot fix this by design. Switch to a chin-bracing pillow (Bcozzy) or a 360-degree wrap with front foam (Cabeau S3). As a stopgap, roll a small towel and place it between your chin and chest to simulate front support and confirm the diagnosis before buying.
The pillow rides up behind my head during sleep
Anchor it. Use the Cabeau's seat straps around the headrest wings, or tighten the Trtl's wrap so the structure cannot migrate. Pillows ride up because nothing holds them at neck height; if yours has no strap system, wedge it lower and lean your head back into the seat to trap it in place.
My neck is sore on one side after sleeping
Check for asymmetric collapse. Foam pillows compress unevenly if your head rests off-center, creating a pressure point. Reposition so your head sits centered, or switch to a structured design (Trtl) that cannot collapse. Persistent one-sided soreness can also mean the pillow is too tall for your neck, forcing lateral bend all night.
The pillow is too hot and I wake up sweaty
Switch materials, not brands. Memory foam wraps trap heat by construction. Move to the Trtl's open fleece design or look for ventilated covers. A short-term fix: wear the pillow over a light scarf to wick moisture, and recline slightly so less foam contacts skin.
Questions, answered
Should a neck pillow go in front of or behind my neck?
Both, ideally. Traditional U-pillows sit behind and to the sides; chin-supporting designs add the front. If yours only covers the back, that is why your chin drops. Position any pillow low, at the base of the skull and upper neck, not up behind the head like a headrest.
My pillow was fine on short flights but fails on long ones. Why?
Foam fatigues. Memory foam compressed for 8+ hours loses rebound progressively through the flight, so support degrades exactly when you need it most. Structured designs (Trtl, Bcozzy) do not have this failure mode, which is one reason frequent long-haul travelers migrate to them.
