Common packing cube problems: zippers bursting, cubes not fitting the bag, wrinkles, and smell buildup.
Packing cube problems are almost always sizing, overstuffing, or zipper issues. These fixes cover the common ones.
Zipper bursts or separates under load
Stop forcing it: an overstuffed cube stresses the zipper teeth past their design. Remove about 20 percent of the contents and the zipper will usually reseat; work it back slowly from the far end. For a separated coil zipper, realign the teeth by hand before zipping. If it recurs, the cube is undersized for what you pack in it, and a larger cube or compression cube is the real fix.
Cubes do not fit well in the suitcase
The cube sizes do not tile your bag. Measure the interior and rebuild the set: two medium cubes side by side in a 22-inch carry-on, slim cubes for the leftover strip. Sell or repurpose the odd sizes rather than fighting them every trip.
Clothes come out wrinkled anyway
Cubes prevent shifting, not wrinkles; wrinkles come from compression and time. Pack structured garments folded with tissue or dry-cleaner bags between layers, fill cubes snugly so nothing slides, and unpack hanging items promptly at the hotel. For wrinkle-prone fabrics, a portable steamer beats any packing method.
Cubes smell musty after trips
Unpack fully between trips and air the cubes out; stored packed cubes trap moisture. Hand wash with mild soap, air dry completely, and toss a dryer sheet or cedar sachet in for storage. Mesh laundry bags need washing after every trip since they hold the worn clothes.

Can a broken zipper be fixed?
Sometimes. A separated coil zipper can be reseated by realigning teeth; a broken pull can be replaced with a keyring. A torn zipper tape or missing teeth means replacement, which is where lifetime warranties from Eagle Creek, Peak Design, or Shacke Pak pay off.
Why do my cubes slide around in the bag?
Underfilled cubes shift. Pack each cube full, and fill dead space in the suitcase with the slim cube, shoes in a shoe bag, or rolled socks. A fully tiled bag does not shift.
