Roborock S8 vs Roomba j7+: Which Robot Vacuum Wins?
Roborock S8 vs iRobot Roomba j7+ compared on suction, mopping, obstacle avoidance, self-emptying, and app experience. Honest recommendation for each home.
#1 in our rankings · Best overall

Roborock S8
Best for: Homes with mixed hard floors and carpet that want vacuuming and mopping in one run.
Our recommendation
Choose the Roborock S8 if you want the most complete robot: vacuuming plus genuinely useful sonic mopping, with obstacle avoidance that handles everyday clutter. Choose the Roomba j7+ if you are a pet owner who values the pet-waste avoidance promise, the simplest app experience, and iRobot's polished software. Both self-empty with the right base configuration; neither is a bad choice.
Mopping
The S8 has a real mopping system: a vibrating sonic mop that scrubs and lifts over carpet. The j7+ does not mop at all. This is the single biggest functional difference between them.
Obstacle avoidance
Both avoid obstacles, but with different philosophies. The S8 uses structured-light 3D scanning to dodge everyday clutter. The j7+ uses a camera trained specifically on hazards like pet waste and cords, backed by iRobot's replacement promise for pet accidents.
Navigation and app
The S8 uses LiDAR for fast, precise mapping and offers one of the deepest apps in the category. The j7+ uses camera-based vSLAM navigation with iRobot's simpler, more guided app. Power users tend to prefer Roborock's app; everyone else tends to prefer iRobot's.

Questions, answered
Which is better for pet hair, S8 or j7+?
Both handle pet hair well with tangle-resistant rubber brushes. The j7+ edges ahead for pet homes because of its pet-waste obstacle avoidance and the self-empty base workflow; the S8 counters with stronger suction specs and mopping for muddy paw prints.
Do both self-empty?
The j7+ in this comparison includes the self-empty Clean Base (that is what the plus means). The S8 supports self-emptying with a compatible dock depending on configuration, so check the exact bundle before buying.
