Security Camera Problems? Fixes (2026)
Common security camera problems: offline cameras, false alerts, short battery life, blurry night video, and gaps in recording.
Most camera problems are placement, Wi-Fi, or settings problems, not broken hardware. Work through these fixes in order before replacing a camera or upgrading your router.
Camera keeps going offline
Check Wi-Fi strength at the mount, not at the router: outdoor walls eat signal. Move the camera or hub closer, switch a dual band camera like the Arlo Pro 5S or eufy Indoor Cam S350 to the stronger band, or add a mesh node near the exterior wall. A camera that drops every night is usually fighting distance plus interference, not failing.
Too many false motion alerts
Shrink the detection zone to the path you care about, lower sensitivity one step at a time, and angle the camera so trees, flags, and the street sit at the frame edges or outside it. Turn on person detection where available: it is free on Tapo, eufy, and Nest models, and a plan feature on Blink, Ring, and Arlo. Radar based models like the Ring Stick Up Cam Pro exist specifically for this problem.
Battery drains far faster than rated
Count the events: a street facing battery camera can wake hundreds of times a day. Reduce the zone, shorten clip length, lower sensitivity, and re-aim away from traffic. Add solar where the brand supports it, or accept a wired model for that one busy spot and keep battery cameras for quiet sides of the house.
Night video is blurry or washed out
Clean the lens, then check for reflections: infrared bouncing off a nearby wall, soffit, or window glass whites out the frame. Angle the camera slightly away from close surfaces, keep glass between camera and scene out of the setup entirely, and on spotlight models like the Wyze Cam v4 and Tapo C120, let the light do the work instead of infrared.
Recordings have gaps or clips start late
Battery cameras wake on motion, so the first half second can be missed; raise sensitivity for the entry zone and mount so people cross the frame rather than walk straight at it, which triggers earlier. For wired cameras with gaps, replace the microSD card with a high endurance model and format it in the camera; a worn card is the usual cause.
Questions, answered
Why is my live view delayed or choppy?
Live view is a real time stream over your upload connection and the camera's Wi-Fi link. Choppiness at one camera points to its signal; choppiness everywhere points to upload speed or an overloaded router. Lower the stream quality in the app as a test: if it smooths out, it is bandwidth, not the camera.
The camera missed an event entirely. Why?
Usually the subject crossed outside the detection zone, moved at the very edge of the PIR sensor range, or the camera was still in its cooldown between clips. Widen the zone, check the cooldown setting, and for must-not-miss spots choose a wired camera recording continuously.
