Shower Head Problems? Fixes (2026)

Common shower head problems: weak flow, uneven spray, leaking at the arm, a handheld that will not dock, and filtered heads losing pressure.

Most shower head trouble comes from build-up, fitting, or a spent cartridge, not from a failed head. Work through these fixes in order before buying a replacement.

Weak flow from a previously good head

Clean the face first: rub silicone nozzles by hand and soak the head in a descaling solution following maker guidance, since mineral build-up is the most common cause. Check that any flow restrictor is seated correctly and that no washer has shifted to block the inlet. If flow stays weak across all taps in the house, the supply, not the head, needs attention.

Spray is uneven or jets shoot sideways

Uneven spray usually means some jets are blocked while others are clear. Clean the face, pick out visible debris gently without damaging nozzles, and descale if the problem persists. If only one section is affected after cleaning, that section may be damaged, and the head or its face may need replacing.

Leaking where the head meets the arm

Turn the water off, remove the head, and check the washer: a worn, squashed, or missing washer is the usual cause. Replace it, add fresh thread tape in the correct direction, and tighten by hand plus a careful final turn, since overtightening cracks fittings and undertightening leaks. If the arm thread itself is damaged, the arm, not the head, needs replacing.

Handheld will not stay docked

Check the dock or bracket for soap build-up, a bent holder, or a hose pulling the head out of position. Clean the dock, re-route the hose so it hangs without tension, and confirm the bracket is fixed firmly to the wall or arm. For magnetic docks, check that nothing sits between the magnet and the head, and that the head is offered squarely to the dock rather than at an angle.

Filtered head losing pressure

Change the cartridge first: a filtered head functions only with a cartridge in place, and a spent cartridge strangles flow. Fit a fresh cartridge of the correct type, flush the head briefly as maker guidance directs, and check flow again before suspecting the head. If a new cartridge does not restore flow, clean the face and check the inlet washer as above.

Questions, answered

How often should I clean a shower head?

Wipe silicone nozzles whenever spray starts to narrow, and descale on a routine that suits your water hardness: hard-water homes need it far more often than soft-water homes. Waiting until jets block completely makes cleaning harder and can damage the face.

Can I remove the flow restrictor for more pressure?

Some heads allow it and some do not, and removing it changes water use and may affect warranty or certification. Try cleaning and a correct fitting first, since a clogged head often feels like a restricted head, and only consider restrictor changes where the maker guidance allows them.

Why does my new head leak at first?

Almost always a washer or thread tape issue: the washer may be missing, doubled, or squashed, or the tape may be wound the wrong way. Refit with a fresh washer and correctly wound tape, tighten carefully, and test before assuming the head is faulty.
