Table Lamp Problems? Fixes (2026)

Common table lamp problems: lamp will not turn on, flickering, touch control not responding, bulb too harsh, and lamps that wobble.

Most table lamp trouble comes from the bulb, the socket, or the switch, not from a broken lamp. Work through these fixes in order before considering a replacement.

Lamp will not turn on at all

Check the bulb first: try it in another lamp, and try a known working bulb in this lamp, which separates a dead bulb from a lamp fault in seconds. Confirm the lamp is plugged in fully, the wall socket works with another device, and any switch on the cord is actually on. On touch lamps, tap firmly on the touch area rather than the shade, since fabric shades do not conduct the touch signal.

Light flickers or cuts out

Tighten the bulb gently, since a loose bulb in an E26 socket flickers as it loses contact. Check the bulb is within the lamp's stated maximum wattage, and try a different bulb to rule out a failing bulb before blaming the lamp. Flicker that follows the lamp when it moves to another socket points to the lamp's wiring or switch, which needs dealer attention rather than another bulb.

Touch control does not respond

Touch the metal base or the marked touch area, not the shade, and keep hands dry, since damp hands and fabric shades both confuse touch sensors. Unplug the lamp for a minute and plug it back in, which resets most touch controllers. If the lamp works from its cord switch but not from touch, the sensor itself has failed, and the lamp still works as a switched lamp while a replacement is arranged.

Light feels too harsh or too dim

Swap the bulb before blaming the lamp: colour temperature and brightness are bulb choices, and a warm, lower-output bulb transforms a harsh lamp while a daylight bulb wakes up a dim one. Check the shade too, since a dark or thick shade absorbs far more light than a white linen one, and a dimmer, where fitted, should be tested across its full range rather than at one setting.

Questions, answered

Why does my new lamp have no bulb in the box?

Many table lamps, including the HAITRAL pairs here, are sold without bulbs so buyers can choose brightness and colour temperature freely. Check the listing's included components before ordering, and buy a standard E26 bulb at the same time if the lamp does not include one.

Can I use a smart bulb in a touch lamp?

Usually yes, but touch dimming and smart dimming can fight each other, since both try to control the same bulb. Set the touch lamp to full brightness and let the smart bulb handle dimming, which gives one control instead of two competing ones.

Why does my lamp wobble on the table?

Check the base sits flat and the table itself is level, since a wobbling lamp is usually a wobbling table. Heavy stone lamps need a sturdy surface, and a felt pad under the base protects the table and stops the small rocking that light bases allow.
