Throw Pillow Buying Guide (2026)

How to choose throw pillows: inserts vs covers, sizing, fill types, fabrics, and how many pillows a sofa actually needs.

Inserts vs covers vs finished pillows: decide this first

Most throw pillow confusion comes from the listing, not the pillow. An insert is the soft inside, usually white, sold to fill a cover you already own. A cover is the decorative outside, sold without anything inside. A finished pillow is both together, ready to put on a chair. Check the listing for the words covers only or inserts not included before you buy, and count what you already own: most homes have inserts hiding inside tired covers, so a cover-only purchase is often the whole job.

Sizing: match the cover, then go one size up

18 inches square is the standard for sofas and armchairs, which is why most picks here are 18 inch. A 20 inch pillow suits a large sofa, and a 16 inch pillow suits a small chair. The useful trick is to buy the insert one size larger than the cover: a 20 inch insert in an 18 inch cover looks plump with full corners, while a same-size insert looks soft and relaxed. The Pillow Perfect pair here is 18.5 inches, so it does not swap into 18 inch covers, which is worth knowing before you order it as an insert.

Fill types: down, down alternative, and microfiber

Real down, like the MIULEE goose down pair, moulds around you, holds a chop, and feels softer than any synthetic, but it needs fluffing and it is not hypoallergenic. Down alternative polyester, like the Utopia and CGK inserts, is washable, allergy friendly, and cheaper, but it feels springier and less sinking. Virgin microfiber, like the Phantoscope four-pack, is a finer synthetic fill aimed at a consistent, hypoallergenic loft. Choose by allergy first, then by whether you want a pillow to sink or to spring back.

Fabric: what each one does in a real room

Velvet adds warmth and sheen, but it shows pressure marks and needs brushing. Chenille adds soft texture in a quiet way, but it can catch on rough surfaces. Linen and faux linen add a relaxed, breathable look, but they crease and, in white, need washing often. Outdoor fabric resists weather and fading, but it feels firmer than indoor fabrics. Cotton canvas, like the Woven Nook set, is the durable middle ground: washable, sturdy, and happy with daily use.

How many pillows, and how to mix them

A three-seat sofa usually takes four to five pillows: a pair at each end and one in the middle, or two pairs plus a lumbar. A loveseat takes two to three, and an armchair takes one. For mixing, use one pattern, one solid, and one texture, and keep a shared colour across them. The Woven Nook Aynsley set does this for you. If you mix your own, let the solid be the largest pillow so the pattern has room to breathe, and keep the brightest colour to one or two pillows rather than the whole sofa.

Care: wash the cover, not the whole pillow

The main advantage of covers is that you can wash them while the insert stays dry. Zip covers closed before washing so the zipper does not snag other laundry, and check the care label first: velvet and chenille need gentler care than cotton canvas or faux linen. Inserts that are machine washable, like the CGK pair, can go in the machine, but dry them fully before use, since a damp insert goes lumpy and smells musty. Vacuum packed inserts need a day to reach full loft after opening.

Questions, answered

How do I make throw pillows look full, not flat?

Use an insert with more fill than standard, or one size larger than the cover, and fluff it daily for the first week. Punch the centre, pull the corners out, and let the fill settle into the corners rather than the middle.

Can I use indoor throw pillows outside?

For a covered porch on a dry day, yes, but bring them in before rain. Only the Pillow Perfect pair here is made to resist weather and fading, and even outdoor pillows should not stay soaked.

What is the karate chop, and does it work on every pillow?

It is the dent pressed into the top centre of a pillow to make it look plump and styled. It works best on soft down and down alternative fills, and poorly on firm outdoor fabric or a flat microfiber insert.

How often should I replace throw pillow inserts?

When fluffing no longer restores the loft, or when the fill has clumped into one side. Synthetic inserts usually last a few years of daily use; down lasts longer if it is fluffed and aired regularly.
