Toaster Oven Not Working? Fixes (2026)
Toaster oven problems solved: uneven browning, burning food, not heating, and timer issues. Causes and fixes.
Most toaster oven complaints are calibration problems, not broken appliances. Check temperature truthfulness first, then work through these fixes.
Food burns on top but stays raw inside
Your oven runs hotter than the dial: verify with an oven thermometer and lower the setting by 25 degrees. Move food to a lower rack position, and for thick items use bake instead of convection, which intensifies top browning.
Uneven browning: one side darker
Rotate the pan halfway through cooking; most countertop ovens have hot spots near the door or rear. If one side is consistently darker, that side faces the stronger element: rotate 180 degrees at the halfway mark as standard practice.
Oven not heating at all
Check the timer is engaged: many models will not heat with the timer at zero. Confirm the function dial is on a cooking mode, not just the light. If the display is dead, test the outlet with another appliance: 1800-watt ovens trip breakers and GFCI outlets.
Toast comes out uneven or pale
Clean the crumb tray: accumulated crumbs insulate the lower elements. For pale toast, the elements may be aging: quartz elements dim over years. Also confirm you are using the toast function, not bake, since element patterns differ by mode.
Questions, answered
Why does my oven smoke?
Grease on the elements or crumb tray is the usual cause: run the empty oven at 400 degrees for 15 minutes after a thorough cleaning to burn off residue. Persistent smoke with a clean interior means food is dripping: use a drip pan under fatty foods.
Can I use aluminum foil inside?
Only on the crumb tray or as a loose tent, never covering the elements or blocking airflow. Foil against a quartz element can cause arcing and damage.
