USB Hub Not Working? 4 Fixes That Actually Help
Your USB hub is not detected, devices keep disconnecting, or ports are dead. Four practical fixes, ordered by likelihood.
Hub problems almost always come down to power, cables, or drivers. Work through these four fixes in order; most issues resolve at step one or two.
Devices randomly disconnect
This is the classic symptom of insufficient power. Connect the hub's power adapter if it has one, and make sure it is plugged into a wall outlet rather than a power strip shared with hungry devices. Move high-draw devices like hard drives to ports closest to the power input, and avoid daisy-chaining hubs when drives are involved.
Hub is not detected at all
Try a different port on the computer first, preferably one directly on the machine rather than through another hub or monitor. Swap the host cable; many hub issues are actually cable issues, and not all USB-C cables carry data. On Windows, check Device Manager for unknown devices, which points to a driver problem.
External monitor shows no signal
Confirm your laptop's USB-C port supports video output; data-only ports cannot drive displays through any hub. Lower the resolution or refresh rate to test whether bandwidth is the limit. If the hub needs a driver for its video output, install it from the manufacturer's site before judging the hardware.
Laptop is not charging through the hub
Check that the hub actually supports power passthrough and that its wattage meets your laptop's needs. Use the hub's included power adapter and the cable it shipped with; substituting a weaker charger silently breaks passthrough. Some laptops also need a BIOS or firmware setting enabled to accept charge over USB-C.
Questions, answered
Why do only some ports work?
Individual port failures usually mean a damaged port or a device drawing too much current. Test the device directly on the computer to isolate whether the port or the device is at fault.
Should I update hub firmware?
Premium docks occasionally get firmware updates that fix compatibility issues. Check the manufacturer's support page once; budget hubs rarely offer updates.
