Video Doorbell Problems? Fixes (2026)

Common video doorbell problems: no alerts, delayed live view, chime not ringing, battery draining fast, and poor night video.

Most video doorbell trouble comes from Wi-Fi, motion settings, wiring, or power, not from a broken doorbell. Work through these fixes in order before considering a replacement.

No motion alerts arrive

Check notification permissions for the doorbell app in your phone settings first, since an app update can silently revoke them. Then confirm motion detection is switched on, the sensitivity is not set to its lowest level, and motion zones actually cover the approach path rather than only the door itself. Test by walking the path yourself and watching for an alert before changing anything else.

Live view is slow to open or keeps buffering

Move the router closer to the door, or add a Wi-Fi extender near the front of the house, since a doorbell at the edge of coverage is the most common cause of slow live view. Switch a dual-band doorbell between 2.4GHz and 5GHz to see which band behaves better at your door, and reduce other heavy traffic on the network while testing. Persistent buffering on every device points to the connection, not the doorbell.

The indoor chime does not ring

Confirm the chime type and transformer match the doorbell's requirements, since an incompatible chime or an underpowered transformer is the usual cause. Check that any chime connector or bypass kit supplied with the doorbell is fitted as the instructions describe, and test the mechanical chime by hand where possible. Battery doorbells that need a separate plug-in chime will not ring an existing wired chime without one.

The battery drains far faster than expected

Reduce motion sensitivity, narrow motion zones to the approach path, and shorten clip lengths where the app allows, since constant triggers are the main battery drain. Cold weather also shortens battery life, so winter charging intervals will be shorter than summer ones. If drain stays extreme after tuning, check for a firmware update and for a stuck live-view session left open on another device.

Night video is too dark or washed out

Add a porch light, since even good night vision benefits enormously from real light, and check that the doorbell lens is clean. Move reflective surfaces, such as a glossy house number or a white parcel box, out of the immediate foreground where they can fool the exposure. If faces stay dark while the background glows, angle the doorbell slightly or add a wedge so the subject, not the street, fills the frame.

Questions, answered

Why do I get alerts for passing cars but not visitors?

Because motion zones and detection types are not tuned to your doorstep. Shape zones to the approach path, enable person detection where the doorbell offers it, and exclude the road from the zone where possible. A few days of tuning usually fixes this better than any single setting change.

Can I view my doorbell when I am away from home?

Yes, live view and alerts work over the internet from anywhere, provided the doorbell itself still has Wi-Fi at home. A home internet outage stops remote viewing even though your phone has signal, which is worth remembering before blaming the doorbell.

Should I reset the doorbell if nothing else works?

As a last step, yes, after noting your settings. A factory reset clears corrupted configuration, but it also removes Wi-Fi details and zones, so it should follow, not precede, the checks above. If the fault survives a reset on a strong connection, the doorbell itself is the likely cause.
