Wine Opener Not Working (2026)
Fixes for common wine opener problems: electric opener will not run, cork breaks, worm slips, and foil tears.
Most wine opener problems come from a flat battery, a worm that is not centred, or a cork that is older than it looks. Work through the fixes below in order before assuming the opener has failed.
The electric opener will not run
Charge it fully first: a full recharge takes hours on most electrics, so a short top-up is not enough. Check that the charging base is plugged in and the opener is seated on it, and clean the charging contacts with a dry cloth. If it still will not run, try the second button, since some models use one button to pull and another to release, and a cork stuck on the worm can stop the motor. If the opener runs but the worm does not turn, the motor may have failed, and the unit needs replacing under warranty.
The cork breaks or crumbles
Stop pulling and check the cork: if it is dry or crumbly, switch to a two-prong puller, which lifts the cork from the outside instead of screwing into it. On a normal cork, the cause is usually a worm that was not driven in fully, or a pull at an angle. Twist the worm into the centre of the cork, straight and slow, all the way in, then lift in short stages with the double hinge. Never lever hard on a half-seated worm.
The worm slips or will not grip
Centre the worm on the cork and push gently as you start twisting, so the point bites before it turns. A worm that is bent, or clogged with old cork, will slip: straighten it carefully or clean it with a brush. On dense synthetic corks, go slowly and let the worm cut its own thread instead of forcing it, since forcing bends the worm and makes the next bottle worse.
The foil tears instead of cutting
Use a serrated blade and cut below the lip, scoring a full ring before lifting the foil away. A flat blade tears the capsule, so switch to a separate wheel cutter if neat foil matters to you. Never use the foil knife to pry, since that snaps the blade at its hinge, and keep the blade clean so it cuts instead of dragging.
Questions, answered
Why does my electric opener stop mid-cork?
Usually the battery is low, or the cork is a dense synthetic that strains the motor. Charge the opener fully, then try again. If it stops on every bottle, the battery may no longer hold a charge, which is the most common electric failure.
Can I use a wine opener on a screw cap bottle?
No, and there is no need to. A screw cap twists off by hand. Using a corkscrew on a screw cap bottle will damage the cap and the opener.
How do I get a broken cork out of the bottle?
Push the remaining cork gently into the bottle with the back of a spoon, then strain the wine through a fine mesh strainer or a coffee filter into a decanter. Do not keep digging at it with the worm, which only pushes crumbs into the wine.
