Floor Lamps Problems? Fixes (2026)
Common floor lamp problems: lamp will not turn on, flickering, dim light, remote not working, and wobbling.
Most floor lamp trouble comes from a bulb, a switch, or a loose connection, not from a dead lamp. Work through these fixes before replacing anything.
Lamp will not turn on at all
Check the plug is fully seated and the outlet works with another device. For socket lamps, try a known-good bulb; for built-in LED lamps, check the touch or foot switch for a firm press and inspect the cable for damage. If the lamp has a remote, try the on-lamp control first to separate a remote fault from a lamp fault.
Light flickers or dims unexpectedly
For socket lamps, tighten the bulb and try a different bulb, since a loose or failing bulb is the usual cause. For dimmable lamps, confirm the bulb is dimmable if a dimmer is in use; a non-dimmable bulb on a dimmer flickers by design. Check the cable where it enters the base, since repeated bending there can break the connection.
Remote control stops working
Replace the remote battery and check for a clear line of sight to the lamp's receiver, since remotes need an unobstructed path. Re-pair the remote following the maker's instructions if the lamp supports pairing, and use the on-lamp control meanwhile to confirm the lamp itself still works.
Smart lamp will not connect to the app
Confirm the lamp is powered on and within range of your router or Bridge, and check that your phone is on the same network during setup. Restart the lamp and the app, and re-add the lamp if it appears offline after a router change. Smart lamps often need a 2.4 GHz network for setup, even if your phone prefers a faster band.
Lamp wobbles or leans
Check that all pole sections are fully tightened and that the base sits flat on the floor. On rugs, move the lamp to a firmer spot or use a flat board under the base if the maker allows it. For arc lamps, re-centre the arc over the base, since an off-centre arc pulls the whole lamp sideways.
Questions, answered
Can I replace a built-in LED head?
Usually not with a standard bulb: built-in LED lamps are designed as a unit, and the head is not a user-serviceable part. Contact the maker for repair options if a built-in LED fails within its warranty period.
Why does my lamp buzz?
Buzzing often comes from a dimmer and bulb mismatch, especially with non-dimmable bulbs. Fit a dimmable bulb matched to the dimmer, and if buzzing persists, try a different bulb brand, since driver designs vary.
Is it safe to leave a floor lamp on overnight?
LED lamps run cool and are generally safe for extended use, but switch off any lamp with a damaged cable, a loose socket, or a shade touching the bulb. For overnight use, choose a low brightness and keep fabric and paper clear of the shade.
