Fix it
Home Projector Troubleshooting
Common home projector problems fixed: dim picture, blurry image, keystone issues, no sound, and connection faults.
Most projector problems come from placement, light, or a wrong input setting, and most are fixed in minutes. Work through the checks below before assuming a fault, and keep the manual's throw distance and input settings in mind.
Picture looks dim or washed out
Dim the room first: close curtains and switch off lamps facing the screen. Check the brightness mode is not set to eco, and clean the lens gently with a microfibre cloth. If the picture is still dim, the lamp may be ageing on lamp models, or the image may simply be too large for the projector's brightness.
Image is blurry or soft at the edges
Run autofocus, or adjust manual focus slowly until the centre is sharp, then check the edges. If only the edges are soft, the projector may be angled too far, so square it to the wall and use lens shift or small keystone correction instead of a steep angle.
Picture is a trapezoid rather than a rectangle
Move the projector so the lens faces the wall squarely, then use lens shift or small keystone correction. Large keystone corrections crop the image and soften it, so physical placement beats digital correction.
No sound from the projector or soundbar
Check the audio output setting matches your connection: eARC or HDMI for a soundbar, Bluetooth for a wireless speaker, or wired audio for headphones. Confirm the source device volume is up and the projector is not muted, and try a different HDMI port if sound is missing on one input.
Streaming app will not play or shows an error
Check Wi-Fi signal strength at the projector's position, and restart the projector and router. If one app fails while others work, clear that app's cache or reinstall it. Models without licensed support for a given app need an external streaming stick for that service.
Projector will not switch on or switches off
Check power cable seating and the outlet, and confirm the projector has ventilation space around it, since overheating triggers shutdown. On lamp models, a lamp warning light means the lamp needs replacing. On portable models, charge the battery fully before judging battery life.
Questions, answered
Why does my projector look worse than in the shop?
Shop demos use dark rooms, small screens, and vivid modes. At home, ambient light, larger images, and natural picture modes all reduce punch. Dim the room, reduce image size slightly, and switch to a film or cinema picture mode for a fair comparison.
Can I leave a projector on all day?
Laser models handle long sessions well. Lamp models run hotter and use lamp life, so give them ventilation and switch off when not in use to extend lamp life.
When should I replace the lamp?
When brightness drops noticeably or a lamp warning appears. Lamp life varies with brightness mode, and eco modes stretch it considerably. Keep a spare lamp if the projector is your main screen.
