Label Maker Problems? Fixes (2026)

Common label maker problems: blank labels, tape jams, faint print, Bluetooth connection failures and peeling labels, with fixes.

Most label maker faults come down to tape loading, power, print head cleanliness or connecting in the wrong place. These fixes cover the handheld, app and desktop models in this guide.

Labels print blank or completely faint

Confirm the tape cartridge is seated and the tape feeds print-side correctly; a cassette loaded against the print head path prints nothing. On thermal-transfer machines (D1, TZe, Rhino), a finished or damaged cartridge ribbon produces blanks, so test with a fresh cartridge. On direct thermal models, old heat-sensitive tape fades: replace the roll. Clean the print head gently with a dry cotton swab or the maker cleaning method before assuming hardware failure.

Tape jams, wrinkles or feeds crooked

Power off, open the cover and remove the cartridge. Pull out any crumpled tape slowly, trim the damaged section square, and reinsert the cartridge with the tape taut and guided through the exit slot. Never yank jammed tape backward through the cutter. Feed a test label and use the cutter only when the tape has fully stopped.

Bluetooth label maker will not connect

Connect inside the manufacturer app (Brother P-touch Design and Print or DYMO LetraTag Connect), not from the phone Bluetooth settings menu; both makers state this explicitly. Toggle the printer off and on near the phone, confirm Bluetooth is enabled, and remove any old pairing entry for the printer before retrying. Keep the phone on a supported OS version and update the app.

Labels peel off or fall off within weeks

Match the tape to the surface job. Paper LetraTag labels on fridge, freezer or garage items are the wrong tool: switch those jobs to laminated Brother TZe tape. Apply any label to a clean, dry, flat surface, press the full length firmly, and avoid stretching tape around tight curves; use the cable or flag modes on the PT-H110 and Rhino 4200 for wires instead of wrapping standard labels.

Handheld eats batteries or will not power on

Use fresh, matched batteries of the specified type (6 AAA on the Brother handhelds and CUBE, 4 AA on the LetraTag 200B), and remove them for long storage. Enable or rely on auto power-off where fitted, as on the LabelManager 160. If you label weekly or more, the rechargeable LabelManager 280 or CUBE Plus, or an AC adapter where supported, ends the battery cycle.

Questions, answered

Why does my label maker waste tape at the start of every label?

Most tape machines feed a leader margin so the cutter clears the printed area. Chain printing multiple labels before cutting, where the model offers it, and designing labels back to back in the app reduces the waste per label.

Can I use third-party tape cartridges?

They exist for D1 and TZe systems, with variable print and adhesive quality. The LabelWriter 550 is the exception: it accepts only DYMO-branded labels by design, which its automatic recognition enforces.
