Massage Gun Not Working? 4 Fixes (2026)
Your massage gun will not turn on, keeps stalling, or stopped charging. Four common causes and fixes.
Most massage gun problems are battery or overheating issues, not dead motors. Work through these four fixes before assuming the worst.
Gun will not turn on at all
Charge it for at least 30 minutes on the original charger; deep-discharged batteries can appear dead. Check the battery indicator: if no lights appear while charging, try a different outlet and cable. Many guns also have a safety lock, usually holding the power button, that can be triggered accidentally in a bag.
Motor stalls under light pressure
First, make sure the battery is well charged, since low charge reduces torque. Reduce pressure and let the gun's weight do the work rather than pushing. If stalling persists at full charge on a gun rated for higher force, the motor may be worn, which is a warranty matter.
Battery drains much faster than rated
High speeds drain batteries dramatically faster than low speeds; drop two speed levels and compare. Heat also reduces effective capacity, so let a hot gun cool before judging runtime. Batteries degrade over years; a gun that once lasted hours and now lasts minutes likely needs a battery replacement, which some manufacturers sell separately.
Gun overheats and shuts off
Thermal shutdown is a protection feature, not a defect. Let it cool for 20 to 30 minutes. Avoid running at maximum speed continuously for more than 10 minutes, and keep air vents clear of lint and hair. Repeated overheating under normal use suggests a failing motor.
Questions, answered
Can I replace the battery myself?
Some manufacturers sell replacement batteries; others seal the unit. Check your model's support page before opening anything, since disassembly usually voids the warranty.
Why does my gun rattle?
A loose attachment is the usual cause; remove and reseat the head firmly. Persistent rattling from inside the housing suggests worn internals.
