Smart Thermostats: Reviews, Comparisons & Buying Guide
Comfort on a schedule, savings without the nagging: learning thermostats, room sensors, and simple smart controls, each matched to the heating system you actually own.
A smart thermostat earns its place on the wall in two ways: it keeps the rooms you use at the temperature you want, and it stops heating empty rooms. Everything else, the learning, the voice control, the energy reports, is a means to those two ends. The thermostats below are judged on those two ends first, and on the cleverness second, because a beautiful display that fights your boiler is worse than a plain one that works with it.
The spread here is deliberate. A renter or a first-time buyer needs a thermostat that installs simply and costs little, which points to the Amazon Smart Thermostat or the Google Nest Thermostat. A household with rooms that run hot or cold needs sensors, which points to the Honeywell T9, the ecobee models, or the Nest Learning Thermostat with its included sensor. And a household that wants the thermostat to largely look after itself should look at the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) or the ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced. Before ordering any of them, check your wiring: several models need a C-wire, and that single check decides more purchases than any feature list.
