Soundbar Problems? Fixes (2026)

Common soundbar problems: no sound, lip sync issues, muffled dialogue, subwoofer dropouts, and HDMI ARC failures.

Most soundbar trouble comes from TV settings, HDMI handshake issues, or placement, not from a faulty bar. Work through these fixes before considering a replacement.

No sound from the soundbar at all

Check the TV audio output is set to HDMI ARC or external speakers, not TV speakers, and that the bar input matches the connection you used. Try a different HDMI cable, since ARC needs a cable that supports it, and power-cycle both TV and bar together to reset the HDMI handshake. If optical is your connection, confirm the TV optical output is enabled and the bar input is set to optical.

Dialogue is muffled or hard to follow

Turn on the dialogue or speech enhancement mode, and centre the sound by disabling surround upmixing for news and drama if it smears voices. Check the bar is not inside a cabinet or behind the TV stand edge, which muffles the centre channel. Also confirm the TV is not outputting a stereo downmix when the bar can handle a proper surround signal.

Sound is out of sync with lips

Use the lip sync or audio delay setting on the bar or TV, adjusting in small steps until speech matches mouths. If the delay only affects one app, that app's own audio settings are usually the cause. External devices connected through the bar, rather than the TV, often sync better, since the bar processes audio once instead of twice.

Wireless subwoofer or rears keep dropping out

Move the subwoofer closer to the bar and away from routers, microwaves, and thick walls, since wireless audio shares the 5 GHz band with Wi-Fi. Re-pair the speakers from the bar's settings rather than just power-cycling, and check for firmware updates, which often improve wireless stability. If dropouts persist, a wired connection for the subwoofer, where the bar supports it, ends the problem.

HDMI ARC stops working after a TV update

TV firmware updates sometimes reset audio output to TV speakers or break the ARC handshake. Re-select HDMI ARC in the TV settings, power-cycle both devices with the HDMI cable unplugged and replugged, and try a different HDMI port if your TV has more than one ARC port. As a fallback, optical audio restores sound immediately while you troubleshoot ARC.

Questions, answered

Why does my soundbar turn off by itself?

Most bars have an auto-standby timer that powers them down after a period with no signal. Disable it in the bar settings if it annoys you, or check that the TV is actually sending audio rather than sitting on a silent menu screen.

Can I use a soundbar with a projector?

Yes, over HDMI eARC from an AV receiver or a projector with eARC, or over optical and Bluetooth where supported. The main difference is placement: with a projector screen, the bar sits below the screen at ear height, just as it would below a TV.
