LED Strip Light Buying Guide (2026)

How to choose an LED strip light: RGB against RGBIC and COB, white light, length and cutting, control, and weatherproofing.

RGB, RGBIC, and COB: pick the colour technology first

RGB strips show one colour at a time, which is fine for a simple glow but looks flat next to a gradient. RGBIC strips show several colours at once along the strip, so they can paint gradients and moving effects, which is why the Govee H619A leads this list. COB strips pack the LEDs so closely that the strip looks like one smooth band with no dots, which suits visible runs. Choose RGBIC for colour, COB for a visible strip, and plain RGB only when the budget is very tight.

White light is a separate job

Colour strips are poor at white light unless they carry dedicated white diodes. RGBW and RGBWIC strips add white diodes, so they can give clean white for reading or kitchen work, while a plain RGB strip mixes its colour diodes and the white looks tinted. If the strip must do real lighting as well as colour, buy a strip with white diodes, such as the Tapo L930-5, the Nanoleaf Essentials, or the Govee Strip Light 2 Pro. If it is only for accent light, a plain RGBIC strip is enough.

Length, cutting, and measuring first

Measure the run before ordering, and add a little for corners. A 16.4ft strip suits a desk, a bed, or a television, while a 32.8ft strip covers a whole room. Most strips can be cut at the marked points, but several premium strips cannot be extended once cut, including the COB Pro and the Strip Light 2 Pro, so a cut that is too short cannot be fixed. Never cut a strip while it is powered on, and keep the offcut only if the maker says it can be reused.

Control: app, voice, remote, or camera

Smart strips are controlled from an app and by voice, which suits schedules and routines. The cheapest kit in this list answers only to a remote, which is simpler but cannot join a smart home. Camera strips like the Govee H6199 add a third kind of control: the light reacts to the television screen. Choose the control that fits the room: an app for a bedroom, voice for a living room, a remote for a simple setup, and a camera for a television.

Weatherproofing and where the strip goes

Indoor strips have no weatherproofing and must stay inside. Outdoor strips like the Govee H6175 are rated IP65, but on most listings only the strip itself is waterproof, while the adapter and control box are not, so they need shelter. Mounting matters too: clean the surface before sticking the tape, use clips on rough or textured walls, and keep the adapter within reach of a socket. A strip that falls down after a week is usually a dirty surface, not a bad strip.

Questions, answered

How do I hide the dots on an LED strip?

Hide the strip behind furniture, under a cabinet, or behind a television, so only the glow shows. If the strip must be visible, use a COB strip like the Govee COB Pro, or a strip in a diffuser channel like the Govee H61B5, both of which spread the light into a smooth line.

Can I join two strips together?

It depends on the strip. Some strips support extensions up to a stated maximum, while others cannot be extended once cut. Check the listing for the maximum length and the extension packs before buying a second roll.

Do LED strips damage walls or paint?

The adhesive can pull paint off a weak or freshly painted wall when the strip is removed. Use mounting clips where possible, test a small piece first on a painted surface, and warm the adhesive with a hair dryer before peeling a strip off.
