Most USB mic problems come down to the operating system routing audio to the wrong device. Work through these fixes in order.

Microphone not detected at all

Unplug the mic, wait 10 seconds, and plug it directly into a rear motherboard USB port rather than a hub. Hubs and front-panel ports sometimes deliver inconsistent power. If it appears after this, the hub was the problem.

Mic is detected but records silence

Open your sound settings and confirm the USB mic is set as the input device, then raise the input volume slider. Many systems default back to the built-in mic after updates, and the USB mic's own gain may be turned down.

Audio sounds distorted or crackly

Lower the mic's gain until your loudest moments stay out of the red on the level meter. Distortion in digital recording cannot be fixed afterward, so record slightly quiet and normalize later rather than pushing levels hot.

Mic works in one app but not another

Check the app's own audio settings, as many apps (especially browsers and conferencing tools) keep independent input selections. Also check OS privacy settings, which can block microphone access per application.

Questions, answered

Why does my USB mic sound quiet?

Usually low gain or too much distance. Move closer to the mic and raise gain until normal speech peaks around two-thirds of the meter, leaving headroom for loud moments.

Should I reinstall drivers for a USB mic?

Almost never. USB mics use standard class-compliant drivers built into the OS. Reinstalling rarely helps; input selection and gain are the usual culprits.
