How to choose an air mattress: height, internal support, pump types, sizing, capacity claims and care, with a decision framework.

Start with where the bed will sleep

Guest room: buy height (16 to 22 inches) and a built-in corded pump. Tent: buy the opposite, a low profile and a rechargeable or battery pump. Dual use: a mid-to-tall camping-grade bed like the Coleman SupportRest. Most disappointment comes from buying a great bed for the wrong room.

Decision framework: buy this type if, avoid if

Buy a coil or Fiber-Tech bed if two sleepers will share it or stays run past two nights; structure is what prevents the middle sag. Avoid single-high beds if the sleeper is older or has knee trouble, no matter how good the price. Buy a built-in pump if the bed lives at home; avoid corded-only pumps if the bed travels to sites without power. Buy a framed cot combo if stays are long and storage exists; avoid it for small apartments.

Reading capacity and size claims

Capacities in this guide come from manufacturer and retailer listings (600 lb is typical for a raised queen; one retailer lists 700 lb for a full). Treat them as comparison figures, not test results. On size, check length as well as width: at least one major queen here is 78 inches long, not 80, which tall sleepers will feel.

Care, storage and the first three nights

Every new air bed stretches. Inflate it the day before first use, top it up, and repeat for 2 to 3 nights before deciding it leaks. Store it fully deflated, loosely folded, away from heat and sharp edges, with the pump cap closed. Patch kits fix pinholes; seam failures are a warranty claim, so test on arrival and keep the receipt.

Questions, answered

How long should an air mattress last?

With occasional guest use and careful storage, several years. Nightly permanent use shortens that sharply. The seams and pump are the usual failure points, in that order.

Is a built-in pump worth it?

At home, almost always: it removes the lost-pump problem and deflates the bed fully for storage. For camping without power, a rechargeable pump like the Etekcity's is worth more.

What sheets fit a 20 inch air mattress?

Deep-pocket fitted sheets in the matching bed size. Standard pockets are cut for 12 to 14 inch mattresses and will pop off a 20 to 22 inch bed, flocked sides or not.

Can I repair a leaking air mattress?

Pinholes in the vinyl, yes, with the included or a standard vinyl patch kit, following the kit's cure time. Leaks at seams or around the pump housing are rarely durable repairs; use the warranty.
