Air Mattress Problems? Fixes (2026)

Common air mattress problems: overnight softening, slow leaks, pump trouble, sliding sheets and a cold sleep surface.

Most air mattress complaints trace back to temperature, new-material stretch, or one small leak. Work through these fixes in order before replacing the bed.

Bed feels soft every morning

First rule out the innocent causes: air contracts as the room cools, and new PVC stretches for 2 to 3 nights (Intex states this directly). Top up before bed during break-in. If a broken-in bed still softens nightly, inflate it, close the pump cap firmly, and listen and feel along seams; a spray of soapy water on suspect areas bubbles at a leak.

You found a pinhole leak

Mark it, deflate the bed, clean and dry the area, and apply a vinyl patch with full cure time before re-inflating. Keep the flocked side issue in mind: patches grip best on smooth vinyl, so a leak under flocking may need the patch area trimmed per the patch kit instructions. Seam leaks usually mean a warranty claim instead.

Pump runs but the bed will not inflate

Check the pump cap or valve is set to inflate, not deflate, and that the bed is unrolled flat without kinks at the intake. On corded pumps, try a different outlet. On rechargeable models like the Etekcity, charge fully first; a weak battery spins the motor without building pressure.

Sheets slide off during the night

Use deep-pocket fitted sheets sized for the bed height, and prefer flocked surfaces (the King Koil flocks its sides for this reason). Sheet suspenders under the bed are the cheap universal fix for smooth vinyl models.

The bed sleeps cold

The air inside matches room temperature, so insulate: a mattress pad, foam topper layer (the AeroBed Quilted builds one in), or a thick blanket between sleeper and sheet. On floors and tent ground, add a blanket or groundsheet under the bed as well.

Questions, answered

How do I find a leak I cannot hear?

Inflate the bed firmly, then work section by section with soapy water brushed on seams, the pump housing and the valve. Bubbles mark the spot. Weigh the bed down with bedding while you check, since some leaks only open under load.

Why does the bed squeak or creak?

Vinyl shifting against a hard floor. A rug, blanket or non-slip mat under the bed silences most of it and also protects against floor debris punctures.
