Bath Towel Buying Guide (2026)

How to choose bath towels: GSM, cotton type, size, weave, and wash care, explained without jargon.

Start with GSM, then size

GSM, grams per square metre, is the simplest guide to thickness: 400 GSM and below is light and fast drying, 500 to 600 GSM is the practical sweet spot for most households, and 700 GSM and above is spa-level luxury that dries slowly. Size matters just as much: a standard bath towel at 27 by 54 inches suits most adults for drying, while a bath sheet at 35 by 66 inches or larger wraps fully. Choose GSM for feel and drying time, and size for coverage, rather than letting one number decide both.

Cotton type and weave

Turkish cotton, with long staple fibres, tends to be soft and absorbent, while Egyptian cotton offers similar luxury with a slightly different hand. Ring spun cotton gives a smoother, stronger yarn than open-end cotton, and weave changes feel too: terry pile absorbs well, zero-twist pile feels softer and fluffier, and z-twist pile holds its shape better. None of these alone guarantees a good towel, but together they explain why two towels at the same GSM can feel different.

Absorbency against rail drying

Every towel trades absorbency against drying time: thicker towels soak up more water and then hold it longer on a rail. In a well-ventilated bathroom with a heated rail, a thick towel is no problem; in a small, humid bathroom, a lighter towel that dries fully between uses is the better choice. Spread towels fully, leave air gaps, and avoid folding a damp towel over itself, since trapped layers stay damp longest.

Sets, colours, and rotation

A complete set saves repeat ordering, but check exactly what is included: some boxes are bath towels only, while others cover hand towels and washcloths too. Two bath towels per person is a practical minimum for rotation, and colour coding helps in a family bathroom. A wide colour range, offered by most sets here, makes matching a bathroom and assigning colours easy.

Wash care that keeps towels soft

Wash new towels before first use to remove finishing and reduce lint, use less detergent than the bottle suggests, and skip fabric softener entirely, since it coats fibres and cuts absorbency. Dry on low heat or on a line, and avoid over-drying, which stiffens pile. A towel that feels stiff usually needs less detergent and gentler drying, not replacing.

Questions, answered

What is the best GSM for bath towels?

For most households, 500 to 600 GSM: thick enough to absorb well and feel plush, without the very long drying time of 800 GSM towels. Choose below 500 GSM for gym and travel, and above 700 GSM only when spa thickness is the priority.

Should I avoid fabric softener on towels?

Yes. Fabric softener coats cotton fibres with a waxy layer that feels soft at first but reduces absorbency and can leave towels feeling greasy over time. Wash with less detergent and dry gently instead, and softness returns without the coating.

How do I stop towels shedding lint?

Wash new towels separately before first use, since early lint is normal for thick cotton. Lint settles with washing, and washing towels separately from dark or lint-sensitive items at first keeps the rest of the laundry clean.
