Bath Towel Troubleshooting (2026)

Fixes for common bath towel problems: stiffness, musty smells, lint, fading, and slow drying.

Most towel problems come from washing or drying habits rather than from the towel itself. Work through the fixes below, starting with wash care, before replacing a set.

Towels feel stiff after washing

Cut detergent by about half and skip fabric softener, since build-up is the usual cause of stiffness. Dry on low heat or on a line rather than over-drying, and add a plain rinse cycle if the machine allows, to clear residue from the pile.

Towels smell musty even when clean

Mustiness usually means a towel stayed damp too long. Wash hot following the care label, then dry fully spread out with ventilation, not folded over a rail. Improve bathroom airflow and wash towels after three to four uses, sooner if they stay damp.

New towels shed lint everywhere

Lint in early washes is normal for thick cotton. Wash new towels separately before first use, and keep them away from dark or lint-sensitive items for the first few washes, until shedding settles.

Towels have lost absorbency

Fabric softener and detergent build-up coat fibres and cut absorbency. Wash without softener, use less detergent, and run an extra rinse to strip residue. If absorbency does not return, the pile may be worn flat, and replacement is sensible.

Colours have faded or bled

Wash coloured towels in cold water with like colours, and avoid bleach on coloured cotton. Fading over many washes is normal, but bleeding on first washes can be reduced by washing a new coloured set separately before mixing it with other laundry.

Towels take too long to dry on a rail

Spread the towel fully with air gaps, rather than folding it double, and ventilate the bathroom or use a heated rail. If drying time is a constant problem, switch to a lighter 500 GSM set like Lane Linen, since GSM is the main driver of rail drying time.

Questions, answered

How often should bath towels be replaced?

When the pile is flat, absorbency does not return after a proper wash, or edges and seams fray. With good care, a quality cotton set lasts a few years of regular use, while a thin set may need replacing sooner.

Can I use bleach on white towels?

Occasionally and sparingly, following the care label, since bleach weakens cotton over time. For routine freshness, hot water and proper drying usually do the job without bleach.

Why do towels feel rough after line drying?

Line drying in still air can leave pile feeling crisp, especially in hard water areas. A short tumble on low heat after line drying, or a shake before hanging, usually restores softness without needing softener.
