Microphone Accessories Buying Guide (2026)
How to choose mic accessories: boom arms, shock mounts, pop filters, and what actually improves your audio.
Start with positioning
A boom arm is the foundation. It gets the mic close to your mouth and off the desk, which improves every recording more than any other single accessory.
Isolate vibration
Shock mounts decouple the mic from desk-transmitted noise. If your recordings include thumps from typing or bumps, this is the fix.
Tame plosives
Pop filters diffuse the air blasts from p and b sounds. Position the filter a few inches from the mic, not touching it.
What to ignore
Ignore most bundled accessory packs with flimsy parts. Buy the three core items separately from reputable makers and they will last years.
Questions, answered
What order should I buy in?
Boom arm, shock mount, pop filter. Each builds on the last.
Do I need all three?
For voice work, yes eventually. For casual calls, an arm alone is a big step up.
Will accessories fix a bad mic?
No. They remove problems around a good mic. A bad mic needs replacing, not accessorizing.
What about acoustic treatment?
Separate topic, bigger impact on echo. Accessories handle mechanical noise; treatment handles reflections.
