Mini PC Problems? Fixes (2026)

Common mini PC problems: no display, Wi-Fi drops, slow performance, overheating, and a machine that will not boot.

Most mini PC trouble comes from connections, drivers, or heat, not from a broken machine. Work through these fixes in order before considering a repair or replacement.

No display on the monitor

Check the monitor input matches the cable, since monitors often sit on the wrong input after a switch. Try a different port on the mini PC and a different cable, and confirm the machine is actually powered on by listening for the fan and checking the power light. If one output works and another does not, the port or cable is the cause, not the machine.

Wi-Fi keeps dropping or runs slowly

Move the mini PC away from metal objects and other electronics that block wireless signals, and try the 5GHz network band if your router offers it. Update the wireless driver from the maker's site, and test with a wired Ethernet connection to separate a Wi-Fi problem from a broadband problem. A USB wireless adapter can also confirm whether the built-in wireless is at fault.

The machine feels slow or stutters

Open the task manager and check whether memory or the drive is full, since both cause stuttering on small machines. Close unused browser tabs and background apps, remove startup programs you do not need, and check that the drive has free space for the system to work. If slowness started suddenly, a recent update or a failing drive is worth checking before blaming the processor.

The fan is loud or the case feels hot

Clear the vents and move the machine out of enclosed shelves, since mini PCs depend on airflow around a small case. Check for dust in the vents with the machine off, and reduce sustained heavy loads by closing demanding apps when they are not needed. Persistent heat with light use can indicate a stuck fan or dried thermal paste, which needs maker support rather than home repair.

Questions, answered

Why does my mini PC wake up by itself?

Wake-on-LAN, scheduled updates, and connected peripherals can all wake a sleeping machine. Check the power settings for wake timers and device wake permissions, and disable wake-on-LAN if you do not use it, which solves most unexpected wake-ups.

Can I leave a mini PC on all the time?

Yes, and many owners do, especially for servers and media centres, since these machines draw little power at idle. Keep vents clear, let the machine sleep when idle if uptime is not needed, and restart it occasionally so updates and maintenance complete cleanly.

What should I do if the mini PC will not boot?

Check power first: the adapter, the cable, and the outlet, then try a different outlet. Disconnect all peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, and try again, since a faulty peripheral can block booting. If the machine still shows nothing, note any lights or beeps and contact the maker's support with those details.
