Ring Light Buying Guide (2026)

How to choose a ring light: size, brightness, CRI, color temperature, and what actually matters on camera.

PLThePickLedger ResearchEditorial teamUpdated Research-based assessment · The Best Ring Lights (2026)

Size and softness

Larger rings produce softer light. 10 to 12 inches suits desks; 18 inches is the content-creation standard. Bigger is more flattering but takes more space.

Brightness and CRI

Look for real lumen figures and 90+ CRI for anything public. Dimmable output matters more than maximum brightness, since you will rarely run full power.

Color temperature

Adjustable temperature (around 3200K to 5600K) lets you match room lighting. Fixed-temperature lights look wrong half the day.

What to ignore

Ignore claimed wattage equivalents and most bundled extras you will never use. Prioritize light quality and a stand that does not wobble.

Questions, answered

Do I need a ring light or a softbox?

Rings give even frontal light and catchlights with minimal setup. Softboxes offer more control but need stands and space.

What is bi-color?

Bi-color lights adjust from warm to cool white, letting you match ambient light throughout the day.

Can a ring light replace window light?

For video, often yes, and more consistently. Windows change with weather and time; a light does not.

How close should the light be?

As close as possible without entering the frame. Closer means softer and more flattering.
