Monitor Light Bar Buying Guide (2026)

How to choose a monitor light bar: glare-free optics, brightness, colour temperature, controls, backlight, and monitor fit.

Optics first, brightness second

Asymmetric optics are the non-negotiable feature: they angle light onto the desk and off the screen. Every bar in this guide has them, and any bar without them is just a strip light that will glare. Once optics are confirmed, judge brightness against your desk size: 500 lux suits a small desk, 1000 lux suits a large one, and lumens matter less than lux at the desk surface.

Decision framework: buy this type if, avoid if

Buy a BenQ Plus if you want the safest all-round bar with a dial. Buy a Halo 2 if your monitor is curved, large, or used late at night. Buy a budget Quntis or Baseus if price matters most and your monitor is standard. Buy Xiaomi if design and colour accuracy matter and you can live without a backlight. Avoid any bar if your monitor is thinner than the bar's minimum fit or thicker than its maximum: measure first, since returns for fit are the most common light bar frustration.

Colour temperature and night use

Adjustable colour temperature is worth paying for: cool light for daytime focus, warm light for evenings, with neutral in between. Fixed-temperature bars force a compromise that becomes annoying within a week. If you work late, add a backlight to the shortlist: wall glow reduces the harsh contrast between screen and dark room more than any front-light setting can.

Controls: dial, remote, touch, or sensor

Dials are the most satisfying daily control, remotes suit deep desks and wall-mounted monitors, touch controls on the bar are acceptable on close desks, and motion sensors suit shared spaces. Avoid app-only control for a light bar: unlocking a phone to change brightness is friction on a device you adjust daily. Auto-dimming is a genuine convenience once calibrated, since it tracks daylight without input.

Fit, power, and desk layout

Measure monitor thickness at the top bezel and check it against the bar's range, especially for curved displays. Confirm a free USB port or adapter with enough power: most bars run on 5 volt USB, but flagship models draw more and dislike weak ports or long extension cables. Plan the cable route before buying, since a bar with a trailing cable across the desk loses much of its tidiness advantage.

Questions, answered

How much should I spend on a monitor light bar?

Budget bars prove the concept for the lowest price, and the Quntis ScreenLinear is the rational floor. The BenQ Plus is the sweet spot for most desks, and the Halo 2 is justified for curved monitors, night work, and shared desks. Beyond the Halo 2, returns diminish fast.

Can one bar light two monitors?

Partially: a long bar centred over two monitors lights the middle well but dims at the outer edges. Dual-monitor desks usually work better with a bar per monitor, or a single wide bar accepted as a compromise. Test with one bar first before buying two.

Do light bars work with laptop screens?

Mostly no: laptop lids are too thin and light for bar clips, and the bar would block the webcam. Laptop users are better served by a small desk lamp or a USB bias light behind the laptop.

Will a light bar interfere with my webcam?

It can block a top-centre webcam. Slide the bar to one side, use the Halo 2 webcam accessory, or mount an external webcam below the bar. Test the call framing before finalising the bar position.
