Smart Lock Problems? Fixes (2026)
Common smart lock problems: batteries draining fast, codes not working, auto-unlock failing, jammed bolts, and app connection drops.
Most smart lock trouble comes from door alignment, weak wireless signal, or flat batteries, not from a faulty lock. Work through these fixes before replacing hardware.
Batteries drain in weeks instead of months
Check the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth signal at the door first: a weak signal forces the radio to work harder and empties batteries. Move the router or add an access point nearby. Then check door alignment, since a dragging bolt makes the motor strain on every lock cycle. Use fresh alkaline batteries from one pack, and avoid mixing old and new cells.
The bolt jams or the lock reports a jam
Open the door and test the bolt by hand. If it throws freely with the door open but drags when closed, the strike plate is misaligned: loosen it, shift it a fraction, and retighten. Also check for seasonal door swelling and hinge sag, which are common in wooden doors. Never force a jammed motor repeatedly, since it can strip the gearbox.
Codes work sometimes but not always
Clean the keypad, wake it with a tap before entering the code, and enter digits slowly and firmly. Re-enter the code in the app to rule out a typo or an expired schedule, and check that the code is assigned to the right lock if you run more than one. Gloves, wet fingers, and low batteries all cause intermittent keypad and fingerprint failures.
Auto-unlock never triggers, or triggers late
Confirm location permissions are set to always allow, Bluetooth is on, and battery optimisation is not killing the lock app in the background. Auto-unlock also needs a short period away from home to arm, so testing it from the driveway after standing at the door will not trigger it. Keep a code or key as backup rather than depending on auto-unlock alone.
The app will not connect to the lock
Stand near the lock and toggle Bluetooth, then restart the app and re-pair from the lock settings rather than the phone Bluetooth menu. For Wi-Fi locks, confirm the lock is on your 2.4 GHz network, since most locks do not use 5 GHz. If the lock vanished after a router change, it needs its Wi-Fi credentials entered again, which is normal, not a fault.
Questions, answered
Why does my lock beep and flash red?
Usually low battery or a jammed bolt. Replace the batteries first, then check alignment. A red flash on code entry alone usually means a wrong or expired code, so verify it in the app.
Can I reset a smart lock if I forget the master code?
Yes, with a factory reset, but it wipes all codes and settings, so you will set the lock up again from scratch. The reset procedure is in the manual and usually needs physical access to a reset button inside, which is deliberate: it stops a stranger resetting your lock from outside.
